Was in Saturday 22nd November, Dumbarton playing at home, international rugby on the telly as well as football, seriously understaffed as the wait for service made me go elsewhere unfortunately

I like the fish and chips when they get it right but it seems that only happens 50% of the time. Fed up buying food here as a result.

This place has gone dramatically downhill since the new manager took over. I’ve given it more than one chance, and each visit has made the issues clearer: the problem is not the venue, not the staff — it’s the manager. On my first visit under the new management, I stood at the bar for around 20 minutes completely ignored while the manager was busy putting up shelves, making eye contact but not even acknowledging customers waiting to be served. I should have taken that as a sign. When I returned more recently, the experience was worse. Prices have gone up again, including now charging for soda water, which used to be free. But the pricing isn’t even the biggest concern — it’s the sales tactics. The manager aggressively pushes shots on customers, even after they’ve declined, and more worryingly, I personally witnessed (and experienced) attempts to serve doubles without asking or informing the customer. This is not “suggestive selling.” This is sneaky, irresponsible, and unsafe. My wife was charged almost £10 more for a round because she was given doubles she didn’t order — and only realised when we compared receipts. I then noticed the same behaviour targeted towards customers who were clearly already intoxicated. I have spent 30+ years working in hospitality. I know exactly what I’m looking at. This is not standard practice — it is completely unacceptable. I attempted to raise these concerns directly with the business. I received no response. No apology. No acknowledgement. Nothing. That, in itself, speaks volumes. I have now taken the matter to the licensing board for formal review, because this goes beyond “bad service.” This is a customer safety issue. This used to be a pub we genuinely cared about and supported for years. We were happy when it reopened. But with the current management in place, we will not be returning — and I’d strongly recommend others pay close attention to what they’re being served and charged for. A pub can recover from high prices or slow service. It cannot recover from a manager who sees customers as opportunities, not people.
