Verulamium Park is one of St Albans’ best assets. a beautiful setting, great space to walk, and a place that reflects the city’s history. That’s exactly why it’s so frustrating that basic maintenance still isn’t being handled properly. The paths around the lake regularly become waterlogged and muddy, and it feels like the same sections are left to deteriorate rather than properly repaired. When the water level rises, the overflow makes parts of the route unpleasant or difficult to use, especially for families with prams, older residents, or anyone with mobility issues. It also seems like the lake area could benefit from more proactive management, dredging/clearing silt and improving drainage, so it’s less prone to overflow and the surrounding paths hold up better. What really gets me is the contrast: St Albans has a huge amount of history, and so many major buildings and landmarks were built and maintained over centuries. Yet today, it feels like we struggle to get straightforward maintenance done in a flagship public park. With the level of council tax residents pay, this shouldn’t be left dragging on year after year. Still a lovely park, but the ongoing path and lake maintenance issues are letting it down. I really hope the council prioritises proper repairs and long-term prevention, not temporary fixes.

Calm, tranquil park in Saint Albans. Nice getaway. Museum on one end. Roman wall along one path. Playground. Lots of large green spaces and a small lake.

Huge park. Lots of space to explore and decent water feature. Enjoyed visiting. Seemed quite popular and busy with tourists.

Verulamium Park in Stβ€―Albans is a delightful 100‑acre haven that effortlessly blends rich Roman heritage with modern leisureβ€” from walking alongside ancient city walls and a hypocaust mosaic to watching swans glide across the ornamental lake . The park offers something for everyone: a thoughtfully themed modern playground, seasonal splash park, crazy golf, and outdoor gym for active fun . With well-maintained paths, picnic spots, and wildlife aplenty, it’s a serene escape or a vibrant family day out. While parking can be tight at peak times, the charm, history, and space on offer make it a top spot in the cityβ€”truly the perfect blend of nature, culture, and community. Highly recommended for all ages!

I used to have many fond memories of visiting Verulamium Park during my childhood on outings to St Albans. My last visit was in April, in which was my first in 4-5 years and unfortunately it was disappointing. The amount of pollution was horrendous, as to how it was flooded to the point where park benches and toilets were inaccessible (as seen in the photos below). Unfortunately on this occasion I am only giving this park just a rating of three stars out of five, which is a shame as usually I do tend to give the majority of parks I visit a four or five star rating. Besides from the pollution, the walk across the bridge was relaxing and took some time to admire the historic roman walls. The reflections of the trees above the pond were great to capture and remind myself as to why this park isn't so bad.

This park has an amazing view of St. Albans Cathedral. It is perfect for a good walk, also there are areas for football and cricket. The park also has two ancient roman ruins, London wall and an impressive roman mosaic which unfortunately is hard to see because is located inside an enclosed structure.

Great for most things you'd want of a park and pretty big. The main areas have all the usual family stuff and ice creams etc, and there are some beautiful nature areas around the edges beyond the bits of roman wall. There are little valleys/dells of woodland with bluebells etc, and lots of interesting geology so brilliant if you like archeology and fossils etc. There are toilets at the museum car park but that one gets very busy on Saturdays, so the Westminster leisure centre is a safer bet especially if you are meeting friends. Overall a great place, but I've never liked the very man made lake/pond which is shallow and usually filthy! Happily though, I read on a sign that they are looking to make it more natural, so that will improve it greatly! There are some bits of chalk stream around it that are much nicer, and I hadn't really explored much of til recently, lovely for a doggy dip or paddle. Chalk streams are also quite a rare habitat, so you can learn a bit about wildlife too, and hopefully the lake improvements will help to preserve it.
