The steaks are served without sauce. We ordered broccoli but gives us mushroom. A very confused dinner. It’s a discount night, but it also feels missing something in the food and services.

We stayed one night at the Malmaison hotel and eat dinner and breakfast in the restaurant Chez Mal. Due to the strong winds the patio area was closed, but I'd imagine that on a warm summers evening it would be great. Dinner was superb, good size portions and not excessively overpriced. Some sides you have to pay extra for, but they were generous portions. I had calamari and my wife a prawn cocktail. Both were great. Mains, a burger and baked hake with potatoes and broccoli sides. Both were excellent. The service was superb, Alfie our waiter was polite and attentive, offering suggestions were needed, a real credit to the restaurant. Breakfast was a combination of self service for continental and waiter service for hot breakfast. The quality, quantity and service was again excellent. Overall, very good and we will revisit again.

food was subpar, especially for the price point. beef was cold and i asked for pink beef (which it was not) which was a shame but the dessert was amazing! spinach was watery, and a dish came out later. so ups and downs. service was okay, but whoever was in charge of the floor, her attitude was questionable. the only reason i’m giving 3 stars is how the waiting staff tried super hard, bless them. two young boys, applaud them because they made the trip. as did the manager when it came to trying to rectify the situation! i would come again but only if changes are made to the service… especially as it was empty…

The staff was great, kind and speedy. The atmosphere is good. The food in our opinion wasn’t as expected, the brioche bun was dry and a bit hard. We ordered some brisket bites that were extremely dry, wouldn’t recommend. The sea bass however was very tasty! My partner enjoyed the prawn cocktail. from the dessert menu we ordered crème brûlée and it didn’t disappoint… a bit bummed with the starters though…

Visited 3rd April. Great barman who customised a cocktail order for me, it was perfect, thanks. Dining room was quiet, just 4 tables. Seating starting to show wear & tear. Waitress was friendly & pleasant but not paying enough attention to diners. Had to chase her up to ask for the cheque. Bottle of disinfection on view for the duration of our visit. Hubby enjoyed his burger & chips, nice size portion. I had the black bean burger, lovely flavours but had the consistency of mashed potato, would not recommend. There was also no toilet-check during my 90 minute visit...

As many others trip advisors we decided to try this restaurant due to the rave reviews & being no1!, so booked well in advance and packed kids off to friends for the night. Yes, the decor and ambiance is well pitched, a little bohemian, which Brighton is, and of course Giorgio front of house, very welcoming. However I would of liked to have been offered an aperitif (had been looking forward to a prosecco),to peruse my menu over and to try the lovely fresh, but slightly undersized 'amuse bouche', especially as we were assured we had the table for the night to ourselves so no rush. The paper napkin was a shame as the rest of the table oozed decadence, with silver candelabra and menu holder. We tried both starters, rice balls, and stuffed aubergine, but was sort of thing I'd make at home for friends, Main course lacked enough seasoning, but Giorgio did supply condiments without us having to embarrassingly ask. The lasagna traditional was tasty, but not out of this world, the braciole, seemed overwhelmed with bread and very little meat, also would have like to have seen another vegetable to accompany, we were served a few saute peppers. Finally the tiramisu dessert lacked a punch (think the booze had been omitted). It was nice home cooked food, which can only assume was cooked by a home cook and not a trained chef. The ingredients seemed bulked out with cheaper stuff, which I can guess would be the way they do it in Sicily old times, but restaurants claiming excellence need to step up the good stuff. Left here feeling like I could eat more. If I were to go to the same price, area, restaurant again for a special occasion I would go to Fig tree in Hurstpierpoint which really did have me talking about it for days. would keep this place for another day. .
