This was almost the perfect hotel, great location, minutes from the city centre but far enough away to not hear the noise, really nice hotel, the room was nice, but there was one thing that nearly ruined it. Under the bed there are motion detection lights, every time my mate moved during the night, he was in a bed next to mine, it picked up on his moments and activated in turn lighting up the whole room, it woke me up so many times I barely got any sleep and was more tired come the morning than when I was going to bed. Had it not been for the breakfast being decent this review would have been worded completely different, those motion sensor lights are such a poor design choice

It was our first time staying in the Moxy brand and we loved it! All of the staff were helpful and professional. The common areas are so fun and offer plenty of space to meet up, chill out, or work. The location was removed from the tourist madness but still a quick walk to everything of note. The room with two singles was a reasonable size and we appreciated that we could crack the window open. Super comfy mattresses and pillows (and I'm extremely picky about a soft mattress that still gives some support). The bathroom had a real door (no sliding or see through) and a nice big shower with a full door, plus there was an excellent hair dryer. The breakfast buffet was a great value, with lots of tasty hot and cold choices. Strongly recommend a stay in this Moxy!

This is our own experience with this business, and we know different clients will have different experiences — but we always leave reviews based on the service we received when we ordered or visited. Review for: Moxy York – Black Horse Lane, York First Impressions
Moxy York immediately stood out with its fun, urban, and modern vibe. The downstairs area is full of character, decorated with eye-catching urban art, hanging pod chairs, plenty of selfie spots, and even a photobooth complete with dress-up hats and caps. The luggage carts by the entrance were incredibly helpful when we arrived with multiple suitcases. The overall first impression was stylish, energetic, and welcoming. Cleanliness & Safety Concerns
The hotel was clean throughout — from the reception area to the lifts and guest rooms. The lifts are secure and won’t operate until you scan your room key, which we appreciated as an added safety feature. CCTV inside the lifts added an extra layer of reassurance. The bathrooms, both in the public areas and our room, were spotless, and the baby-changing facilities downstairs were spacious with a wide sliding door that easily accommodates a pram. Food Quality
Breakfast was excellent, with plenty of hot and cold options, good coffee, cereals, pastries, fresh fruit, and a variety of juices. Gluten-free options were clearly available, and we loved the sign that mentioned vegetarian sausages cooked to order—just ask a staff member. Everything was well stocked and fresh. The bar also served well-priced soft drinks, and we appreciated the free pints of cold ice water when requested. Ambience & Surroundings
The ambience at Moxy York is playful and modern, with thoughtful design details such as bright pink filler used deliberately to highlight cracks in the concrete floor—turning something ordinary into part of the décor. There’s a beer garden, a pool table, books, board games, magazines like Empire, and even a free retro Street Fighter arcade machine. Everywhere you look, there’s something creative or fun. The hotel feels lively yet relaxing, perfect for groups, couples, families, and students alike. Service & Atmosphere
Every member of staff we interacted with was polite, friendly, and eager to help. The front-desk team created such a welcoming environment. We loved the gesture of a free cocktail or mocktail each on arrival. They even had special offers like a 20% student discount and a free mimosa for graduates on the day we visited. Dog owners will appreciate the custom stand at reception with water bowls for both large and small dogs. Small touches like free cucumber water at the bar and umbrellas available to rent added to the sense that Moxy pays attention to guest comfort. Facilities
The hotel offers lots of thoughtful amenities: A well-equipped workout room directly opposite the lifts Fast, clean lifts with fun selfie-style Instagram templates inside Monthly event notices and clear signposting throughout the hotel A first-floor ironing room accessible with your room key Modern, comfortable guest rooms with sensor lights under the bed (perfect for late-night bathroom trips), air conditioning, USB ports, a European plug socket, a wing-backed chair, a kettle with tea/coffee and Biscoff biscuits, and secure locking feature. Bathroom amenities including shampoo, conditioner, hand wash, and body wash The room was quiet with no banging or noise from other floors, leading to a very peaceful night’s sleep — something not all hotels manage successfully. Although there is no on-site car park, there is a Q-Park nearby and several other parking options within walking distance via parking apps. Signing up for Marriott Bonvoy is worthwhile too, as it makes Wi-Fi sign-in quicker and lets you collect points. Overall
We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel and look forward to staying at The Moxy in York again on our next visit. I hope this honest review helps others make an informed decision.

Hipster hotel close to York's famous Shambles area, initial impressions are grand; the lobby smells lush, they've thrown together some cool Halloween decorations up (complete with bowls of candy). There a babyfoot/fussball table, a pool table and a free-to-play Street Fighter cabinet which, unforgivably, isn't in full working order. As an avid Street Fighter this is a most regrettable turn of events. That said, it's not a deal-breaker and off up to the room we go. The room itself is a tad on the small size and features only a solitary chair. Not great if there's two of you but I guess you can always sit on the bed. Comfort-wise the room itself is very warm and the a/c fails to make a dent. The window barely opens so that doesn't help. There's no fridge or safe in the room which you'd expect, but having not actually checked the facilities on offer when booking that's as much my fault as anything. Breakfast was very much a mixed affair, with Day One being sub-par (cold "hot" food, stale pastries), and Day Two being a vast improvement with everything tasting fresher, hence yummier. Ultimately I really, really wanted to like the place but they didn't make it easy.

First time staying at a Moxi hotel, which is owned by Marriott Hotels as I understand it. First impressions where it's very modern and the deco stands out. The staff are all super friendly and helpful and the room was clean and TV even had ability to cast your streaming services from your phone to the TV. The hotel has a fitness room, gaming areas and cocktail bar. Breakfast is a buffet full English, although I must admit the ingredients taste a bit poor quality but it's okay. I would stay there again.

Have never stayed in a Moxi before and not sure if I will again. Two nights of exceptionally poor sleep due to overheated room you can't cool down enough and a marshmallow for a mattress and I am desperate to get home to my own bed and cool bedroom. Pros Staff lovely Good hot shower Curtains are truly blackout. When closed at night the room is plunged into Stygian darkness which is excellent. Awesome soundproofing. Room and bathroom clean. Cons Overheated room and no air con beyond a window which only reduced heat slightly. Mattress is a marshmallow so sleep difficult as I felt I was constantly being smothered/ sinking. Breakfast vastly over priced for what it is. Same items, done much better and for less by Premier Inn. Overall- meh. The sleep deprivation really put a crimp in my stay meaning I was unable to get around as much of York as I wanted to because I was exhausted after the first night. Personally, I will stick to Premier Inns when using a hotel chain in future - fab mattresses, room temp easy to control. Yes, sleep quality is that important to me.

We had a pleasant stay. Very modern hotel but eben the queen size rooms are quite small and have no storage / wardrobe space. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Special shout-out to Diva who was super caring and checked in if everything is well at our stay. Thanks Diva, you made us feel welcomed and looked after. The only downside was the very strict check in timing. We arrived around midday but were told that rooms are only available after 3pm without checking if maybe our room would already be available. We would stay here again!

Style over substance. Pretty and trendy but rooms small, beds uncomfortable and with only one pillow ( asked for more but didn’t have enough for all our party) no bottled water in room and couldn’t even purchase any from the bar. Aircon wouldn’t work. Two hooks on wall in place of a hanging rail. Clean and good location but not 4 star facilities in room by any stretch.

for families, hotel choices are sometimes limited. we were thankful we could all fit in one room, it was an accessible room, so the bathroom was quite large, but had 0 space for any towels or belongings. there were 2 little pegs on the whole blank wall of the bedroom, kind of bizarre that they had 2 hangers and 2 pegs. we had the sofa bed made up for the kids, and their mattress was basically a blanket over springs. Our bed was ok, but only came with 1 pillow for each person. however when we asked for extra pillows they came immediately and gave us 2 much better pillows! but honestly, the vibe of the hotel was just not what I was expecting. the board games downstairs in the bar were fun for the kids, but it just felt like one large party hotel. weird lighting throughout... Friday night was so loud and so crowded. Also, very confusing that there wasn't a separate check in area, we had to check in at the bar, a very crowded and loud bar. For a Marriott, its definitely unique..... The staff was nice and friendly, and we all loved the friendly dogs too!
