I have to say that I completely love the food and I’ve been going a several times to Umai. Unfortunately, the last time I went there (it was like 6:00pm), I was asked for a reservation. I clearly didn’t have one because I’ve just finished work and I really wanted to buy a curry. A guy beside the counter (I guess it was the manager or someone in charge of the staff) looked very upset about it. The lady who was talking to me ask him if he could take my order which he denied multiple times, not offering me a table (which I do understand, maybe the other tables were booked already) and denying an offer from a customer who was willing to share the table with me. I even had to beg him to take my order as a take away. The lady was very nice about it and was trying to be friendly, but this man was not even trying to hide he was not willing to take my order. It was very frustrating. I was allowed to seat in the customer table, the same one that offer to sit with me earlier, while I waited for my food. Then when I had to pay, he didn’t ask me for the 10% extra charge (didn’t even let me have a look at the receipt ) and just charge me with an annoyed look. I’m giving the place this amount of stars because the staff is lovely and I really enjoy the food. But this man should not be working in customer service if he gets upset for having to take an order in a late shift. Really bad experience I have to say. PD: I’m adding some photos of the times that I’ve been there, available to actually sit on a table and enjoy the food.

Food was okay - table of vegetarians so cannot speak for the quality of fish/meat. Nothing mind blowing, but the dessert was really bad unfortunately (strawberry cheesecake). There’s a 10% service charge, they were okay when we asked to take it off, still, not my favourite thing. No option to differentiate tipping from paying (by card) which makes me speculate that all money goes to the business, rather than tipping the staff.

Are you looking for sushi?! Then look no further! This place was a great find and even convinced my friend who doesn't like sushi!! The menu is large with many options. I had the combo platter which was about £25 for 20 pieces. The fish was so fresh and tasty I wanted more! The servers were really attentive, asked about dietary requirements too. The restaurant was clean and calming, no loud music just great to get out of the busy taffic of Edinburgh. Next time in in the city I'll be coming back for more!

Would have given 5 stars all round if it wasn't for the fact they added an OPTIONAL service charge which wasn't in fact OPTED for by us, it was sneakily added without or knowledge or consent and only realised on the journey home when I took the receipt from my pocket and read it. It wouldn't have been so bad except the server happily accepted the cash tip we handed her whilst knowing that they'd already added a charge on our bill. Rather sneaky and deceptive, check your bills people! I'll be back for the delicious food but I'll be aware of this practice from now on. Fried rolls were delicious as were our mains but the cold chocolate fudge cake was dry and tasted a bit stale.

Lovely dinner in Anime inspired surroundings with very friendly and helpful staff. Was an early dinner, so restaurant quiet but expect it would have a cool vibe when busier. Really recommend the sushi, it was great but the Ramen broth was lacking a bit of depth on both the Chicken and Pork dishes we tried. Japanese cheesecake was also a hit, light and fluffy and not overly sweet. Will be back for sushi for sure

Lived in Edinburgh for 6 years and it was my first time visiting Umai and I was not disappointed. Nice smaller restaurant with a great vibe. Service was fantastic and food was perfect. Good value for money! Will definitely be back. Thank you again!

Visiting Edinburgh for the weekend - amazing sushi! The pork belly ramen was insanely good! The mixed fried roll salmon and tuna with cream cheese was for me the best dish! Lush! Definitely would recommend this place! They put a service charge on at the end but the staff were great so no issues there!
