1pm on a friday snd along the coast to Rottingdean dip where a big white square building stands guard between the traffic lights, the prom and the beach's undercliff path walkway. To me, The White Horses evokes a nostalgic callback to British drinking culture with the front half being the Public Bar (beer and bar snacks for the hoi polloi) and a Saloon Dining room to the rear for the toffs. Lunchtime sunshine means toasty and warm even halfway through December, thanks to some amazing glazing. An airy Art Deco sundeck homage, crossed with a Crystal Palace inspired conservatory that curves from floor to ceiling. The view rolls out across the terrace, 'twixt sky and sea, quick nod to the windfarm if it's clear, register your number plate for three hours of free parking, and we're finally sitting down with menus. Madame started with the Warm Heritage Beetroot salad, varieties presented were Pickled Purple and Gorgeous Golden. Add some vegan crumble, pine nuts and the plumpest blackberries I've ever seen, Longhill cafeteria this is not! Haddock and chips looked great, the crispy crunchy consistency of the batter was banging. Mushy peas and a green gherkin ketchup and not one dirty look when someone asked for some red sauce please. Seafood Linguine came with plump prawns, chewy calamari, homeless mollusc meat twizzled into a tomato base that was sweet and savoury and zingy AND rich! The Beach Burger came with an unexpected slather of really flavoursome shredded...... beef [?], the toasted bun had an almost pretzel style look to it, suitably sized for bun in every bite and more importantly was soft and pillow-y to eat. With consistently sufficiently firm enough consistency to not disintegrate, the chips were fries and the mystery mayo had marmite in. No black treacle ice cream for Footman James, you only get that with a jammy spotted dick apparently. I got tutted at for laughing when the double scoop of coffee ice-cream and blackberry sorbet reminded me of a particularly rough school rugby match. When venues add a percentage gratuity (in this case 12.5%), that's exactly what they get. this time it didn't bother me at all since the staff on shift all changed as Footman James was licking his ice cream bowl. Great ambience, great view, great food for the price, great lunchtime experience, Giddy up dahn the 'Orses, naahh!

My wife and I popped in on the off chance and without a booking for a Sunday roast last weekend. The place was packed, but they willingly found us a table and thereafter provided tremendous service and great food. Honestly the roast chicken I had was one of the best roasts I’ve ever had and my wife (a veggie) said her Cauliflower Wellington was very good, and she’s had some really ordinary veggie roasts elsewhere that are tacked onto a menu with little thought or imagination. Be back soon!

My partner & I came here for lunch today. We had a starter each and then shared the Signature Platter. The food was fantastic. Everything tasted fresh, perfectly cooked & tasty. Very pleasantly surprised. The accompanying Guinness bread was really good. It feels dense to touch but not to eat. The dips were really nice. Even the caviar was nice, which I don’t usually like. My only complaint is there wasn’t enough of it! The staff were lovely & very attentive when required. The restaurant is really beautiful. The view is fantastic. Even the chairs we sat in by the window were lovely armchairs, really comfy.

Booked in for 1 night and paid £350 for a room without breakfast included (wow) (without a balcony) which was such a shame as we’d walked 12 miles to this hotel so we could have a room looking over the beach. The room we actually got was a large well designed room in the roof of the second floor. I went down to ask if we could swap rooms and it was a stern no. They are all booked. Fair enough, slightly moody receptionist. But our evening got exceedingly better as Nathan served us in the restaurant on the veranda and he was such a lovely man. So attentive and actually cared. We had a really lovely 3 course meal with cocktails because he was so good at his job. I actually wanted to eat elsewhere because I didn’t think the lady on reception gave a hoot about our stay. Thankfully we didn’t, the chicken skewers were so good and the fish was moist and fluffy. Really good chef. Cheese board was a delight and the chocolate dessert. Scott enjoyed an old fashion and mojito all really great quality. Nathan made our day by being funny polite and just really good at what he does. Thank you

We booked for 2 nights with a Virgin voucher and paid to upgrade to a room with sea view, which was definitely worth it. Room was rather tired but the location was great and we loved just sitting watching the sea - very dramatic at the end of March! The breakfasts were very good and we had one evening meal, which was also good. The staff were all very helpful and friendly and made us feel very welcome. Only reason not to give 5 stars is decor in room.

Food (pulled pork / polenta cakes) was tasty but the pulled pork wasn't very hot. Main problem was the service: we waited for over 45 minutes & some of our group had to go elsewhere as they stopped taking orders for half an hour whilst the kitchen tried to catch up. Lively vibe, nit the place to go if you want a quiet meal or chat.

Went for lunch today. I was surprised how busy it was but good service. Asked for the gluten free menu and it was good with wide variety of choice. GF bread nice. Be nice if there were more lighter options for lunch but that’s Greene King menu.

Had a one night stay here last week travelling for business. Great location on the sea front with parking right outside. Hotel rooms are clean with huge comfortable beds and I had a balcony with impressive sweeping sea views. Great evening meal in the restaurant the pie was plentiful with well cooked sides. All the staff were quick, attentive and gave a good service. Will definitely return both for business and with the family.

Very lovely place to stay. Sea view rooms are great, having a small balcony Breakfast is okay but a bit pricey. Evening meal was very nice and well presented. Minor fault with en-suite sink drainage. Bed and Pillows, very comfortable and clean. Staff very pleasant & helpful
