Ignore the negative reviews. My partner and I had such a lovely experience here. The food was flavoursome, quick to come out, and the waiter was on top form. So so lovely and knowledgeable. ORDER THE SPATCHCOCK CHICKEN. It’s an underdog and better than the lamb - my partner and the waiter agree. Falls off the bone and is so flavourful. Bacon and spring onion mash is unmatched. Get it. Or regret it.

One of the best meals I’ve had in my life. I had the chicken with the mustard mash and my partner had the beef. We also tried the haggis as a starter. It was excellent. Everything was cooked to perfection and delicious. Can’t recommend this enough, MUST GO! Our server was excellent and she helped us make good choices.

First off, don't complain about a wait if you can't bother to make a reservation. Our experience at Makars Mash was one of the best we've ever had in any restaurant we've visited. I did make reservations quite far in advance (before they began the 30-day res window) and maybe that's how we were fortunate enough to enjoy the front window table? We started the meal with a shared scotch egg and a wee dram for each of us. Food and drink came quickly, as it did throughout the meal. For our mains, my wife ordered the breaded lion's mane with the bacon and spring onion mash, and I had the same mash but with a lovely half spatchcocked chicken on top. The taste, quality, and portions of food were absolutely 5 star, as was the service and overall experience. If you're visiting Edinburgh, get the reservation and make life easy for yourselves! Special shout-out to Nico and Bev for the outstanding hospitality, as well as coming up with a solution for our leftover scotch egg sauce to come home with us. See you next time Makars Mash ✌️

Actually... not worth the wait. This place has been on my wishlist for a long while and while it wasn't bad by any means, and it wasn't expensive which is definitely working in its favour; this place is something of a victim of its own success. Expectations were only heightened by the 90 minute wait for a table and when it finally came down to it we were fairly underwhelmed. Lion's mane nuggets, 6/10, couldn't really discern much mushroom flavour or texture under all that batter. Hagfis and mash, 6/10, haggis was a bit bland with only a faint liver aftertaste. The mash was a bit nothingy, and altogether too little gravy. Sausage and mash, 6/10, the actual sausage was nice enough, but again the mash was a let down. Duck confit 8/10 with mash 5/10, the duck itself was nice - juicy, tender and tasty. But again was quite disappointing. Dry and tasteless that was not at all made for with either the carrot purée or gravy. Sticky toffee pudding, 6/10, the cake was dense and rich enough, the sauce was thin. It wasn't bad, which is why it's not a sub-5 score, but it was just a bit average.

We came across Makars Mash Bar online after reading rave reviews. We didn’t have a booking so we had to wait on our table. The text service was great as it allowed us to go away and get a notification when a table was available. Every single member of staff we came into contact with were so lovely, they are a real credit and should be commended for their customer service skills. The setting is super cosy and I loved the Scottish themed wall decals - it was very unique and charming and gave us something to look at/read whilst waiting on our food. The menu had lots of choice and the food arrived quickly. We chose the scotch egg and mushroom starters and the beef shoulder for our mains. The food was amazing - the beef was so tender and we loved the novelty of choosing our mash. I had the applewood smoked cheese mash and it was delicious! Portions are big, the gravy was lovely and the sides were incredible. Our only complaint is that we wanted to sleep afterwards as we felt so full! The food is total comfort food and made us feel like we were having a nice home cooked Sunday dinner. Being here felt like a warm hug - we didn’t want to leave and we felt so comfortable and at home. We can’t wait til’ the next time and we’ve already recommended this place to so many people.

Incredible food. Scotch egg was pricey for just 1 egg but quite unique. Highly recommend as a starter. Beef Haggis was the star for me. So good and the gravy was so rich but not overly fatty. Gammon and the lamb shank were also very good. Every dish came with mashed potato which was good. Great service. David was very friendly and attentive and went above and beyond to help us tourists. Highly recommend!

Definitely recommend. I wanted to try Haggis and the mini Haggis they offer are a perfect introduction to it. They were delicious. The meat was good quality and the mashed potatoes were super good. I particularly liked the chili mash which I definitely recommend for spice lovers. Really nice staff. We didn’t need a reservation. Just walked in around 6pm and were seated within 5 minutes.

Highly recommended! Very delicious meal with generous portion, good price and very friendly staff. Child selection available so we can order more dishes when everything looks so good and hard to decide. Two of us finally ordered 1. House salad with Scotch eggs 2. Lamp shank 3. Veggie haggis 4. Smoked bacon and spring onion mash 5. Cheddar cheese mash 6. Smoked bean medley mash . We finished all without waste!! So good!!

Fantastic, you won't regret coming here! Absolutely delicious food with a great variety of choices. For a starter, we ordered the scotch egg which was very good. For mains, we both ordered the lamb shank and it did not disappoint. Beverley, our waitress, was super friendly. Food came out within a reasonable time, it was hot, tasted fresh and moreish. I highly recommend booking a table ahead of time as this place does get really busy!

The best sausage and mash I have ever had. I attended after finding this place whilst researching for my trip to Edinburgh, and I’m glad I found it. The food was wholesome and delicious. The sausages were unbelievable and the spicy mash was perfect for spice lovers. The beef fell apart when cutting into it and tasted delicious with the gravy. The puddings also deserve a mention as they were very tasty. The atmosphere was great and the staff were friendly. This is definitely a place that I will return to in the future and recommend to family and friend visiting Edinburgh. It’s also an independent restaurant so I’m glad to support it.
