This must have been, and could be again, an amazing place. Risley Hall is a wonderful property, steeped in history and architecture, but unfortunately, the owners have let it go. It looks like it's not been decorated in places since the early 90s. The floor in the breakfast room needs new joists and it's falling away at the sides, the room I was in was very sub par, even for a 3-star. The mattress was the worst I have ever slept on, and I've spent time in army barracks. There seem to be next to no staff. All I saw for the 4 days there was the young lad who was tending the breakfast room. Breakfast wasn't too bad, a good cooked selection, and cereals but nothing else. The coffee was awful, and the teabags in a bowl tasted stale. Worst about Breakfast was the sausages. These were the cheapest of the cheap, worse than Richmond, that I wouldn't feed to a dog. It's a real shame that the.bar is never open as this would be a real plus for the hotel. Lastly it seems that this is a pet friendly hotel which is great but they need to ban pets from the room where Breakfast is laid out, can not stand animals around food.

I was concerned by reviews I read but our room was large, clean and had very comfortable beds. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. The hotel is still a work in progress and being a listed building changes can take time. Don't be put off by reviews makeup your own mind.

Not bad overall. Was dreading coming here after reading so many poor reviews. However it wasn't as bad as expected. Really random place, feels like a ghost hotel. I can imagine it used to be lovely but now struggling and in need of big investment and good management. Good service at check in, nice polite lady. No issues. Room was massive though a little bare asides a four poster bed and a funky wardrobe. It was clean but tired. The mattress was really poor but no problem for one night. Bathroom again massive, twin sinks but everything all a bit old and shower was a bit rubbish. However it worked. Breakfast was basic and quality average but enough to keep you going. Cutlery could do with a good clean and polish. Staff again were polite and hard working. Check out simple. I've stayed in a lot worse and considering the price I can't complain too much. However just left feeling this place could be so much better and deserves to be. It's a fantastic building and location. Oh there's a decent pub round the corner. If it wasn't for that, you'd be a bit stuck.

Lovely hotel, I booked ahead and got a really good price. I was greated at the front desk and the member of staff was very friendly. My room was a lovely size. The toilet had a slight flushing and leaking issue hence the 4 stars. Other than that I was very happy with my room. I did unfortunately have some very noisy neighbours in the room next door as they kept having people banging on their door every 10 minutes. This went on until way past midnight and carried on again at 6 in the morning.

OK so first the positives. The rooms were warm and comfortable, which are really two of the most important things you are looking for when staying somewhere to get a good night's sleep. The one staff member we met was lovely and was happy to arrange for us to change rooms upon arrival. Sadly, this hotel is in desperate need of renovation. Secondly there is no restaurant or bar. You can order breakfast, which we didn't do. Some of the hotels advertising shows a swimming pool and spa. There are NO spa facilities at this hotel. This would be incredibly disappointing for people who book to enjoy a swim.

Lovely period building but our room had no heating and was in desperate need of renovation. Holes in the walls water only just warm and rain shower was a drizzle. Toilet flush was delicate and not always flushed properly. No food or drink was available, apart from breakfast which was reduced to Cereal & Toast on the Sunday morning. Had to eat out on the Friday and Saturday. We were not made aware of this prior to our arrival. We were here for an anniversary weekend and were very disappointed. Not so where we will go to again.

To start off I have to say the location and the hotel is wonderful. It's a beautiful building with loads of character and history. The breakfast was wonderful and the staff are very friendly and helpful. It would of got 5⭐ if it wasn't for the room itself. It was a large bedroom with loads of room and a nice comfy bed but! The lights would not turn on in the bathroom, bulbs were out in the bedroom and wallpaper was coming off by the window and big gaps round the window let the heat get out. I had to pull the curtains up and tuck on the window cill to stop the draught and keep the heat in. But I have to say it's a beautiful place to stay.

It was cheap! I have known this building from when it was a reform school in the 70s! The hotel that subsequently followed was superb ( as was its restaurant) I haven’t eaten there since 2002 when it was perhaps up there with one of the best restaurants in Derbyshire?! We used to have staff Christmas parties there ( the last one when it went into receivership) they too were excellent! With vision, I agree with a previous review, this is a Β£350 a night hotel…. HOWEVER…. For Β£41.25, it was cheap and served a purpose. The local reputation is extremely poor, hampered by its recent use as a hostel of immigrants. I have no clue why this hotel was chosen for this purpose. The rooms are recently painted and clean, but dodgy wiring and plumbing need looking at! We personally wouldn’t have dared use the lift which looked like a blast from the 60s! IF someone had large pockets and restores to its former glory, we would be prepared to pay much more and despite living only a mile away, would visit regularly! The staff were extremely pleasant and eager to help! 2 crucial things needed - lighting outside, it’s extremely dark and old lights have been Pushed over and damaged. The reception signage and directions to, need to be clear! Ion its current state, it reminded me of a Chateau in occupied France circa 1942! It would provide a fab film location set

Based on website we were very much looking forward to our stay in the family suite. On arrival reception staff very polite but our room which was in the conference annexe I was shocked at the very tired basic facilities but we decided it was 1 night and we were just using to sleep. In evening we we returned to bed down, discovered the headboard was practically falling off and the mattress just sunk on touch. I had no choice but to complain about the night receptionist was kind to give us 2 rooms in main house. The main house is gorgeous and has some original features but is in need of a million pound renovation. Current management I feel are doing it more harm than good by taking bookings, website raises expectations and reality is worse than budget hotel. Breakfast was no better, cheap poor quality. I recommend closing the hotel, renovating the main house and revamping the grounds and then reopening as a 5 star establishment. Could easily demand Β£350 a night then and will give enough revenue to update the annexe. In current state I would book holiday inn. I apologise for negative review but it's the truth.

This place has so much potential! But it could be so much better. The staff were all super friendly and helpful, I can't fault them at all. The building is absolutely stunning! The rooms are very very basic and not very well decorated, but comfortable and all the necessities are provided. Hot showers, coffee facilities and clean and tidy. The bar and restaurant were closed, but that could be due to the time of year. The grounds could be so lovely but are sadly not maintained. I feel like this place has the potential to be a real nice high end hotel. If they just invested a little more time etc into it, they could have something really amazing. I feel like its just a little neglected but the price does reflect this so...
