Amazing food and great service. A hidden gem and worth stopping. Can't believe we drove past this for so many years before trying it out!
Delicious traditional English and Caribbean hot food, good service, it was a bit chilly. Decoration is cosy, proper traditional English pub. The fireplace was lit (sofa area, not dining area). There is parking space BEHIND the pub. We went early November on a Saturday late afternoon, there was a large selection of spiced pumpkin dishes on tbe board that sounded delicious. We can’t eat hot (“spicy”) for health reasons so we had the fish dish of the week - rainbow trout - and the beef burger, plus a side of fries. Everything was delicious and special mention for the chips and the fries, both were well crunchy and still soft inside, we had a really good meal. The food and plates were very hot, it was nice to have food that stayed warm until the last bite. We did end up using our scarves as “shawls” and I keot my wollen hat on because it felt really chilly inside.
What a gem of a find just by chance. The mutton curry and chicken and spinach curry was excellent. It was good to see a mixed West Indians and traditional British menu which catered for every taste. Service was good and the chef came to check if all was well. Friendly pub but decor a bit tired. Will definitely be back
Have passed by here for years and not found time to stop. Made time today and had an amazing birthday meal. Curry goat was amazing, my wife's pork chop was enormous, tender and beautifully cooked. My son's steak gorgeous and apparently the cheeseburger was the best my daughter has ever had. Fantastic staff too, so friendly and happy to answer any queries. Great local beers too. Great to see a small local place so busy
Superb authentic Jamaican food. I stayed here for 4 weeks whilst on business and tried everything on the specials board and the menu and loved everything. Jazz the chef was the kindest nicest man you could ever meet and nothing was a problem. He really cares that you enjoy your stay and more that you love his food. A class act.
The cuisine here is truly outstanding. If you are looking for REAL, authentic and most of all traditional Jamaican food, you won’t find anywhere better in Sussex! We have eaten here 6-8 times and have tried various dishes, including curry goat, the reggae roast chicken, plus many of the side dishes, such as plantain and coleslaw. Everything is cooked to perfection and is every bit what you would expect from a Jamaican chef who knows what he is doing. The service is lovely from this family run place, where you are always greeted with a warm smile. The chef comes out to great diners which is a nice touch. The drinks selection is excellent too. If Caribbean isn’t your thing, you are well looked after here (although why would you not want to sample it?)! You have your usual traditional pup food on the menu too. All looks good, but I’ll be honest, it’s curry goat or jerk chicken with rice and peas all the way for me! We were here last week and we’re back again now!
A combination of excellent food and good beer is hard to beat. The menu is varied and there are often special dishes to add further choice. Whatever you order is - in my humble opinion - likely to be uniquely delicious; the spices enhances the flavours without dominating or overpowering your taste buds. I enjoyed a pint of Harvey's Old Ale with my lunch. I had visited this establishment last year and my recent experience was just as pleasant. I travelled from West Sussex, so perhaps that in itself is a recommendation. I look forward to further visits in the future.
My husband and I did a overnight stay and had a really nice time. The room was clean and comfortable, and even though it was above a pub, it quieted down by the time we went to bed. We had dinner and breakfast there, and both meals were large and tasty. Friendly service too.
I had wanted to try Caribbean food for some time and so was eager to do so having been given the opportunity. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. My starter of chicken wings ticked all the boxes - the meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and has a delicious sweet and spicy combination. The goat curry was also very tasty, though not as hot as I had anticipated. One of the two ales on offer (I can't recall the name) went very well indeed with the food. Highly recommended.
