Since its founding in 1958, Maharani has stood as a cherished landmark of authentic Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine, right in the heart of South London. From the outside, it may appear to be a typical Indian restaurant, but step inside and you are greeted by a stylishly modern décor that sets it apart. Even more exciting, the owner shared plans for a complete refurbishment, which will introduce a fresh, contemporary ambience while preserving the restaurant’s unwavering commitment to culinary excellence. Our party of four embarked on a memorable culinary journey guided by recommendations from our generous host and the accomplished manager, Alex—a Scotsman delightfully at home running an Indian curry house. We began with starters of crispy Bengali Fried Sardines and succulent Lamb Shashliks served with fluffy Peshwari Naan. The main courses were simply outstanding: a beautifully slow-cooked Parsi Lamb Dhansak, a rich and flavourful Chittagong King Prawn Bhuna, and an array of classic sides including Tarka Daal, Saag, and crisp Bhajis. Each dish was faultless—bursting with authenticity and flavour. Equally impressive was the service. The waitstaff went above and beyond—whether because we were special guests or simply a reflection of their natural hospitality, it made the evening all the more special. “Where do I begin? Out of 3 local cafes in my area the E9 cafe has given me the opportunity to actually write a positive review about. Now don't get me wrong, the other two cafes were 'okay' but that's not what I'm looking for in morning food hunt with the misses. The portion size was great, the E9 special English breakfast was not at all expensive and not burned. The staff are extremely nice and helpful, brang the tea and coffee right away and even the food waiting time was very minimal. Whatever you do wherever you go E9 cafe is the place to be!”

The dhal was my favourite..though it was the thokku that was a bit hit in our house, especially my daughter's. “Kokoro is a superb addition to the food offerings in Caterham. It has a great variety of asian staples like Chinese sweet and sour, Japanese curry/teriyaki, and Korean bulgogi. The sushi here is delicious and the only place nearby where it's available. By the way, don't overlook the bulgogi. It's not as eye catching as some of the other dishes but it's packed full of great flavours. If you're ordering the spicy tofu, just know that the spice level is no joke! Been here three times and the customer service has been stellar during every visit. Look forward to visiting again soon.”

The prices are very reasonable for what you get, and the owner is really friendly, which makes the experience even better. Definitely worth a visit!!”

Have been ordering the chilli tofu here on a regular basis and am never disappointed. Can make the food very spicy too which is an added bonus. Don't expect any ambience but go for the food”
