Since its founding in 1958, Maharani has stood as a cherished landmark of authentic Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine, right in the heart of South London. From the outside, it may appear to be a typical Indian restaurant, but step inside and you are greeted by a stylishly modern décor that sets it apart. Even more exciting, the owner shared plans for a complete refurbishment, which will introduce a fresh, contemporary ambience while preserving the restaurant’s unwavering commitment to culinary excellence. Our party of four embarked on a memorable culinary journey guided by recommendations from our generous host and the accomplished manager, Alex—a Scotsman delightfully at home running an Indian curry house. We began with starters of crispy Bengali Fried Sardines and succulent Lamb Shashliks served with fluffy Peshwari Naan. The main courses were simply outstanding: a beautifully slow-cooked Parsi Lamb Dhansak, a rich and flavourful Chittagong King Prawn Bhuna, and an array of classic sides including Tarka Daal, Saag, and crisp Bhajis. Each dish was faultless—bursting with authenticity and flavour. Equally impressive was the service. The waitstaff went above and beyond—whether because we were special guests or simply a reflection of their natural hospitality, it made the evening all the more special. “We had the octopus to start. Tender and tasty - well prepared and presented. Very nice and at a very reasonable price. I had the deluxe burger. A very juicy, tasty burger topped with steak, with the chip shop chips. Really enjoyed it. My wife had the mixed seafood. Large juicy prawns, mussels, sea bass and salmon in a very nice sauce. All in all we thought the food was great and service was very good although they were quiet and don’t have their alcohol licence as yet - but should have it soon. Mus was our waiter - an asset to the restaurant. Made sure we had everything we needed. We’re really looking forward to returning to Barbarossa and sampling more of the menu.”

“I ordered food here from Deliveroo and I just had to give a good review. I got the dimsum platter mixed for one which had a great variety. I got a spicy beef ramen which was flavourful and actually spicy! Also the portion size for that was really good too, enough for two. I also had some sesame balls which was a nice sweet treat in the end that wasn’t too sickly sweet. Really good quality food and will definitely buy from here again !!”

“Wouldn't usually rank a supermarket, let alone with 5 stars, but mostly just wanted to counteract some of the negative reviews and say this little shop offers something none of the big supermarkets on Holloway road seem to - *soft plastic recycling*. For me that's reason enough to visit once every few weeks and shop here instead of my usual store, even though the prices are disproportionately high as other reviewers have noted. Will also say that they have a pretty decent selection of gluten-free products given the small size of the store.”
