From the moment we stepped through the door, he greeted us like old friends and immediately swept us up in his world of sizzling steaks and global culinary flair. Having worked in kitchens all over the world, Sonny brings a depth of experience that turns dinner into theatre. He personally guided us through the hot rock cooking method, with the kind of enthusiasm that makes you think, “Why haven’t I been cooking my steak on a lava slab all my life?” As someone who’s worked in the meat trade, I can say without hesitation — this man knows his stuff, and then some. We both went for the sirloin (by recommendation) — a bold choice, but one that paid off in juicy, buttery dividends. Sonny’s homemade infused butters (think garlic, herb, and something unidentifiably magical) gave us the tools to elevate the experience from “bit of fun” to “culinary revelation.” The novelty of cooking your own steak at the table was quickly eclipsed by the incredible flavours — tender, perfectly seasoned, and sizzling with satisfaction. What started as a quirky night out turned into one of the best meals we’ve had in ages. And just when we thought we couldn’t possibly be more impressed, out came that deconstructed cheesecake. Creamy, indulgent, and dangerously moreish — hands down, the best either of us has ever had. This isn’t just a hidden gem — it’s the kind of place you want to gatekeep, but feel morally obliged to shout about. So next time you want to impress someone special (or just treat yourself like royalty), head to Hot Rock. Go for the steak, stay for the cheesecake, and let Sonny turn your dinner into a work of art. “Excellent atmosphere. Lovely fresh food. Nicely cooked. Every dish we have tried is fantastic. The mocktails are lovely. The owner is really pleasant and caring. He is really passionate about excellence in customer service. Really enjoyed here. Staff all lovely. Very clean. They have Grunwerg cutlery, so that says no expense spared for a cafe restaurant. Highly recommended and plan to dine here again.”

“A massive choice of amazing sandwich of all sorts, wrap, panini's, bread sandwiches rolls. Today I had Jamaican Jerk chicken toasted wrap and it was amazing. It was a shame I don't live local otherwise I would be there everyday. Can't recommend enough and will be visiting next time im in Halifax which may end up being sooner rather than later to have a good lunch :) super friendly lady that works there too. It did only seem to be a takeaway sandwich shop rather than somewhere you eat in.”

“We just returned from a wonderful lunch and afternoon at Upfront Art Venue. The puppet show was absolutely delightful, and the venue itself is charming and intimate. The staff were incredibly welcoming and generously shared their knowledge of puppetry, which made the experience even more special. It’s truly a hidden gem in the area. The café offers an excellent selection of vegetarian dishes, all equally delicious. Everything looked freshly made, and the service was outstanding. Highly recommended!”

“Went on a Sunday afternoon, had a short wait for a table. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Didn’t wait too long for food. The food was nice and so was the cakes. Place was kept clean.”

“Always a great atmosphere here; generally (and unsurprisingly) busy, but we’ve never yet failed to find a table. Really good layout with plenty of space. Dogs are made very welcome (with their own little treats corner), but there is a dog-free area for those that prefer it. Food is great, served quickly and delivered with a smile. Staff are fab and super-friendly. From the menu, a special shout out must go to the eggs bennies - our regular favourite - but the avocado toast and the mushrooms are also delicious! Really good range of drinks - especially very good coffees, and you can easily walk (or cycle) off your meal by stepping out of the back door straight onto the canal path for a little wander. We are not cyclists but will continue to be regular walk in visitors nevertheless. This place is a big favourite.”

The selection is great, it's well priced and the service is excellent too. Highly recommend the bagels, the Texan one with brisket in particular, but the roast beef one is also delicious and so it's the gochujang pork belly. The cakes are also very good.”

“Great spot for a spot of dinner. I had homemade cottage pie with onion and cheese mash topping, lashings of gravy, chips and peas! Absolutely massive portions. The cafe had a lively atmosphere with plenty of locals and tradesmen coming in for coffee and butties. The staff were brilliant; polite, courteous and very accommodating.
