Since its founding in 1958, Maharani has stood as a cherished landmark of authentic Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine, right in the heart of South London. From the outside, it may appear to be a typical Indian restaurant, but step inside and you are greeted by a stylishly modern décor that sets it apart. Even more exciting, the owner shared plans for a complete refurbishment, which will introduce a fresh, contemporary ambience while preserving the restaurant’s unwavering commitment to culinary excellence. Our party of four embarked on a memorable culinary journey guided by recommendations from our generous host and the accomplished manager, Alex—a Scotsman delightfully at home running an Indian curry house. We began with starters of crispy Bengali Fried Sardines and succulent Lamb Shashliks served with fluffy Peshwari Naan. The main courses were simply outstanding: a beautifully slow-cooked Parsi Lamb Dhansak, a rich and flavourful Chittagong King Prawn Bhuna, and an array of classic sides including Tarka Daal, Saag, and crisp Bhajis. Each dish was faultless—bursting with authenticity and flavour. Equally impressive was the service. The waitstaff went above and beyond—whether because we were special guests or simply a reflection of their natural hospitality, it made the evening all the more special. “This place is simply sublime! The two best dishes in my opinion are Beef with green pepper in black bean sauce and their Roast duck with fried rice. Stumbled across this tiny, almost hole in the wall-esque restaurant when a friend of mine from China recommended it. Reasonably priced and of good quantity. The grumpy looking owner is like a funny cartoon character. Although he's annoying and hard to understand, the food is well worth the hassle.”

They stock a wide range of popular and high-quality products—there’s always something great to find. What really sets them apart, though, is how convenient they’ve made shipping. They now accept a variety of couriers including Yodel, DHL, Royal Mail, and InPost, which makes posting parcels incredibly easy. Highly recommended for both shopping and sending packages!”

“We stayed for one night in December 2010. The house is immaculate, the bedroom spacious and the shared bathroom (ours was the one without an en-suite) luxurious. A lovely, freshly cooked breakfast and a very friendly hostess. Very convenient for London rail links and very upmarket area.”
