Since its founding in 1958, Maharani has stood as a cherished landmark of authentic Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine, right in the heart of South London. From the outside, it may appear to be a typical Indian restaurant, but step inside and you are greeted by a stylishly modern décor that sets it apart. Even more exciting, the owner shared plans for a complete refurbishment, which will introduce a fresh, contemporary ambience while preserving the restaurant’s unwavering commitment to culinary excellence. Our party of four embarked on a memorable culinary journey guided by recommendations from our generous host and the accomplished manager, Alex—a Scotsman delightfully at home running an Indian curry house. We began with starters of crispy Bengali Fried Sardines and succulent Lamb Shashliks served with fluffy Peshwari Naan. The main courses were simply outstanding: a beautifully slow-cooked Parsi Lamb Dhansak, a rich and flavourful Chittagong King Prawn Bhuna, and an array of classic sides including Tarka Daal, Saag, and crisp Bhajis. Each dish was faultless—bursting with authenticity and flavour. Equally impressive was the service. The waitstaff went above and beyond—whether because we were special guests or simply a reflection of their natural hospitality, it made the evening all the more special. “To be hounest when i first used the shop they didnt seem to welcome me and there paypoint never worked i was kinda put off by this, i know paypoints are a zero mark up profit so i guess they didnt like you just using the store for just the zero profit benefits as these are used in shops to attract customers to buy items then top up there elcetric or gas , but as i became a regular due to prices in another nearby shop , after a while all of a sudden there paypoint always worked lol and they became more friendly now i wont vist many other small convenience stores because they are atualy nice people when you get to know them and become a regualar customer - husband and wife run store”

“Sainsbury's is always a good choice for shopping but it's important to bring nectar card with you and must used on checkouts. Also to get more benefits/discount unlock all offers in nectors app. Products are great . Staff is helpful. Prices are reasonable.”

“Good full english breakfast in the cafe. The car parking is free for 2 hours maximum so be careful if you’re eating in the cafe and shopping as you might go over time. The store looks big on the outside but feels small inside, I think maybe the isles are narrower. Good selection of food and products here and friendly staff.”

“The best kebab in London. From quality of food to 5 star service. Guys don’t miss out if you want a good kebab a conversation with the staff while ordering good food. My go to is the chicken kebab. But today I ordered lamb and chicken doner for visitors from abroad (Canada) the owner even came and dropped off the salad as I forgot to order it. Amazing.”

“Best Italian in the area. Also a great case study in not always taking Google reviews at face value. The place two doors down is much higher rated but will charge you twice the price for food that is half as good. Here all the bad reviews are from people complaining a delivery was late - the actual food they produce is fantastic. We'd enjoyed it a few times over Deliveroo so decided to go there in person and the service is as good as the takeaway lasagne. Decor might be a bit dated but the service more than makes up for it. Can't recommend it enough.”

“Have been having the food here for years. Appearances are deceiving and behind the very ordinary and unappealing exterior is served the most fantastic selection of indo Chinese foods. Have been ordering the chilli tofu here on a regular basis and am never disappointed. Can make the food very spicy too which is an added bonus. Don't expect any ambience but go for the food”

“Excellent service and great food! Mahdi was an excellent host who served me well and had a good chat with me. I was also helped by the other staff who helped me to know which dishes contained nuts (due to my allergy). But the best thing about this place is the value of its buffet. Great food, good service and excellent value. I highly recommend!”
