“The Black Friar has been amazing to work with for our friendship group's annual Christmas lunch. They made the entire booking process extremely easy, with all the T&Cs clearly outlined from the start. On the day we were looked after by Jess, who was incredible, very quick to respond to any issues raised, never kept anyone waiting, so accommodating with our various quirks (like pictures), and was easy to reach when needed without making it seem like hovering. And always with a smile, of course. Truly, truly a standout member of the team deserving of all the praise. The food at the Black Friar was also divine, incredibly generous portions (that I admit, have bested me) and every bite was a pleasure for all the senses. Our whole group was very happy with the afternoon we got to spend there and we will definitely be looking into coming back for next year's annual Christmas lunch, a total gem of a pub.”

As well as your standard lagers, wines etc there is a seemingly inexhaustible supply of craft beers, with no shortage of local breweries represented. Following the refurbishment, and with growler takeaways imminent, this place isn't resting on its laurels either.”

“We've been coming here as part of our programme MCR Social, asking Projekts to delivery inclusive sessions for the disabled and neurodivergent teens we work with - it has been absolutely amazing! Luke, the instructor, is a fantastic and very supportive coach! Very friendly and approachable, he really helps everyone feel welcomed and at ease, and expertly manages to work with the group who have quite a range of abilities - we've seen some really amazing development, with people clearly growing independence and confidence from the sessions. It's been a massive success and we're so thrilled, the whole group is so excited to visit every time! A big thanks to Luke and everyone at Projekts, as well as Alex and John who helped organise the sessions! We can't wait to come back :-)”

“Great little cinema which is made especially enjoyable by the little introduction that the staff do on each film, giving a little insight into how it was made, or other films the director has made. The place is welcoming to everyone, and when my partner and I went to watch The Handmaiden, there were a wide variety of people in the audience, which is always good to see.”

The acting capability was outstanding. The venue, lovely, small and perfectly adequate. Never been to a show at the Playhouse before, but would 100% return. What an amazing night watching some talented young and older actors.”

“Great social club! Worth every penny of membership fee, 2 snooker tables, one pool table, a nice Dartboard and lovely beer garden. Immaculate all round including the toilets. Great locals, staff, location and more importantly.... great beer! Never had an off pint and changes regularly! Enjoy!”

She struck the perfect balance of attentiveness without hovering, somehow anticipating what we needed before we even asked. Water glasses never dipped below half, orders were double-checked for accuracy. What impressed me most was Nicole’s genuine enthusiasm for the menu. She offered thoughtful recommendations based on our tastes and described each dish with detail – and she was spot-on every time. It’s clear she knows and loves the food here, and that passion is contagious. Beyond the technical side of service, Nicole made the evening memorable with her personable nature. She engaged with us in a way that felt friendly and sincere, not scripted. By the end of the night, we felt less like customers and more like welcomed guests. If you visit, you’re in for a treat no matter what you order – but if you’re lucky enough to have Nicole as your server, you’re guaranteed a truly exceptional dining experience. We’ll absolutely be coming back, and we’ll be asking for her by name.”
