“It was my husband who discovered this place for our dinner with friends. Great vibes and love the fact it is a community pub. My starter of the Korean cauliflower was absolutely amazing and I could have very happily eaten a larger portion as a main. For my main however, I went for the pesto bread and butter pudding and again this was delicious. My husband and friends enjoyed their meals. I was too full for pudding but as I wasn't driving, I enjoyed the special cocktail, whiskey sour, before we headed home. Good vegetarian options.”
“We popped in Thursday 18th of September 2025 , for something to eat with my wife and daughter, because we haven't been to Shrewsbury for years, my daughter had a 4 day break in the city. It's a quaint little cafe , service with a smile and friendly. Reasonable prices good atmosphere it was about 3 o'clock ish and still busy , but got seating okay. Food was lovely and it was prompt . So all in all well worth a recommendation to come again when we next return from Liverpool. Thanks again all staff and cooks from the Taylor trio liverpool.”
“What a fabulous building so much history. Run by English heritage so free for members. Tours are a must they are fabulous. Free car park for members”
“We were served by Hannah C today at Ego Shrewsbury and I have to say she was excellent. So kind, caring and efficient. She catered for everyone’s needs superbly - from the youngest 4 year old to my 90 year old father. Thank you so much Hannah for making our family Christmas meal so relaxed. Food was yummy, atmosphere great. Thank you Ego. All your staff are a credit to you.”
“At last! A proper pub with proper beer, where you can have a proper conversation without intrusive TV screens and not given over to diners rather than drinkers. The Shrewsbury Arms has been completely and tastefully redecorated, with William Morris pattern wallpapers throughout. We (two couples) went on a Wednesday evening where a generous selection of cheese, pate and salami + biscuits was available - all free! There were plenty of customers there, although like many 'wet' pubs I can imagine it could be pretty quiet at times. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back. PS: Did I mention that the beer was excellent? I can recommend Pig On The Wall... Edit: Typo”
“Very welcoming. Light and clean, generously sized rooms with country views. Delicious breakfast with healthy and nutritious offerings, and an added bonus of tasty freshly laid eggs in the Full English choice. I will definitely stay there again when I'm in the area.”
“Kanu Poke Imagine eating in a work of art and tasting wonderful, exciting gastronomic delights! Welcome to Kanu Poke in Shrewsbury. From the moment we walked in we were greeted by a smiling George who was one of the co owners. On commenting about the on-trend decor, he explained that the artwork was designed and painted by his partner Katie. We were a tad early but it wasn't a problem. Seated upstairs in a great window seat we really felt like we were on holiday. Surrounded by colorful murals we were hoping that the meals were going to be as good as the decor. We weren't disappointed. A pleasant server greeted us with some tasty bites and took our drinks order, when they arrived they were colourful just like the decor. The nibbles had set the tone for what was about to come. Popcorn Chikanu and Teriyaki Tofu as starters followed by the Crispy Tofu Sunflower Satay and The Mexicana. We also had a refreshing pan seared teriyaki vegetable medley. Wow, the flavours were unbelievably tasty and fresh and the service quick. What's more it's Vegan, Gluten and Nut free. It's the perfect place to eat plant based flavoursome food. What a find. Keep up the good work!”
“This is the best pizza you'll ever have! The pizza was absolutely delicious. The price was amazing also, what a bargain! Its made fresh there and then and the staff were professional and pleasant. It only took about ten minutes from ordering to walking out the door with the boxes.”
“Amazing food, great service. Go for quiche, mixed salad and some cajun potatoes. Carrot and ginger super smoothie is also worth a go!”
“On arrival the owners were extremely friendly and welcoming. On a Friday and Saturday its a tasting menu. Each course was absolutely delicious. The quantity of everything served was high. A real taste sensation The basil icecream was a beautiful surprise. All areas were spotlessly clean. Service was spot on. Highly recommended restaurant.”
“The food was superb. By a long way the best shooting ground cafe I've ever visited and not overly priced either. I'd definitely use them for lunch when I'm in the area even ifnim not shooting clays.”
“I was delivering garden goods to the property. Staggered by the timeless ambience and beauty of this fine period house and gardens. Like walking into a Somerset Maugham story. Perfect as a film set, hotel or wedding venue. Friendly owners. Am thinking of booking a weekend here.”
“What an absolutely stunning place. For such a huge old building the 1st thing that struck me was the cleanliness, its immaculate. Sunday lunch was beautiful, with friendly service and our room was outstanding. With the winter offer it was real value for money. Our bed was so comfy.”
“The Habitat: Atmosphere and Environmental Fitness The environment of 'La Lanterna' demonstrates a remarkable adaptation for conviviality. The lighting levels were found to be optimal, avoiding both the harsh luminosity that might signal danger and the deep gloom that impedes accurate species identification. The overall ambiance—the combination of visual, auditory, and olfactory stimuli—created an environment of 'Great Atmosphere', which is crucial for the successful ingestion and digestion of resources. The collective murmur of conversation among fellow consumers suggested a high degree of social satisfaction within the population. The décor and spatial arrangement demonstrated an intelligent, calculated use of resources to promote comfort and repose, thus aiding the consumer in focusing maximum energy on the task of consumption. Hypothesis on Atmosphere: A pleasing and supportive environment reduces the consumer's physiological stress, likely enhancing the perceived success and enjoyment of the culinary offering. The Symbionts: Facilitation and Service The indigenous personnel responsible for the delivery and explanation of the specimens—the service staff—displayed a highly evolved degree of efficiency and beneficial interaction. Their performance may be classified as 'Fantastic Service'. Efficiency: The speed and accuracy of resource transfer (the food delivery) exhibited a high level of learned behavior and organizational skill. Adaptability: Requests for minor deviations from the standard specimen preparation were met with flexible and immediate responses, highlighting a key trait of behavioural plasticity essential for pleasing a diverse consumer base. Communication: The interactions were polite and informative, acting as crucial intermediaries between the kitchen's production and the consumer's need for knowledge regarding the specimens. Hypothesis on Service: The facilitating species (staff) exhibits a successful symbiotic relationship with the consumer. Their competent actions maximize the consumer's enjoyment, thereby increasing the likelihood of resource return (patronage), a crucial factor in the establishment's long-term survival and prosperity. Final Synthesis on La Lanterna La Lanterna represents a highly successful ecosystem where excellent culinary specimens (Gnocchi Gorgonzola and Steak Pasta) are presented in an environment of Great Atmosphere and facilitated by Fantastic Service. This convergence of high-quality internal and external factors ensures the enterprise's evolutionary advantage in the competitive landscape of the urban dining habitat. Outstanding.”
“My little one loves going here. They have a wonderful mix of farm animals, which you can feed (the animal food to cheap here compared to other places). They also offer lamb milk feeding which is so cute. They have a barn with cars and bits in, a lovely park and a woods to walk through which help to provide variety and extend you visit. The food and drink is good quality (they have a variety of home baked goods) and for low prices.”
“A little piece of Greece in Shrewsbury. AMAZING food & vibes. Love the little blackboard menus as the food is made fresh. & always as specials. It was fun chatting to other people dining about what they had & we had or were going for as we all had different boards dotted around. We will definitely be back. (Parking on road or opposite) I had the chicken gyros & my partner had the beef which was like a stew. I’m already craving another it was so good! We will pop out for takeaway one Wednesday evening for sure. I’m yet to try the lush looking baklava! It looks like it would be a gorgeous place to visit one summer evening too in the garden.”
“I had green curry, it was so delicious, I loved it so much. Hoping to go back soon. P.S. I don’t leave reviews regularly, but after seeing many spammy reviews with negative comments and fake photos, I wanted to let people know that it’s a lovely place to eat.”
“We came here for our works Christmas meal. There were 30 of us and everyone loved it! The service was spot on and the food was excellent, even for such a big group. Days later people are still talking about what a lovely time they had and how good the food and service were. We'll be back next year!”
“Great pub fantastic conservatory and pub garden prices are low to medium nice local larger and cider. Service great and friendly nibbles offered sometimes and may be possible to eat outside food on premises.”
“Great place. Homely and got a very warm welcome. Breakfast was top quality local sausages and bacon, a very good filling breakfast. Worth £70 a night. My husband and I definitely want to return Highly recommended”
“We were on the lookout for a spontaneous dinner and drinks spot and were pleased to stumble upon The House of the Rising Sun. From the moment we arrived, the customer service stood out—they made sure we were accommodated even though we didn’t have a reservation. Since it was a last-minute night out, we ended up seated at the high chairs, which were a bit uncomfortable, especially if you’re dressed up (like in a tight shirt dress). The interior design is impressive—stylish and atmospheric, though a little too dim for dining. It feels more like a place that’s tailored for drinks and conversation. One standout feature is the bar with its aquarium-style backsplash—absolutely eye-catching. We tried the Teriyaki Beef and Chicken Katsu. The katsu was excellent—crispy, flavorful, and definitely best enjoyed with rice. The beef, on the other hand, was slightly chewy and not as tender as expected. For drinks, we had the classic Mojito and their signature cocktail, Land of Smiles. The latter was a highlight—refreshing with a unique spicy kick that really elevated the experience. Overall, The House of the Rising Sun is a lovely spot for a date night, especially if you’re after a cozy ambiance and creative cocktails. We’d definitely go back—hopefully with a reservation next time!”
“Really delicious food in generous portion. We ordered seafood paradedelle (pasta), marinated sea bream with fried calamari and ragout potatoes, and kid’s chicken with rice. We will definitely come back again! :)”
“Cozy place serving amazing burgers!! Absolutely wonderful meal, plentiful choices and the vibe is extraordinary. Recommend bringing a group of friends or your significant other here. Perfect dining location.”
“What a lovely local pub, everything that pubs used to be. It was a warm welcome with a friendly atmosphere, great selection of drinks, very reasonably priced and although I didn't eat the Sunday carvery looked delicious. I'll be back for sure to try it out .”
“I had my wedding here on the 8th August 2025. Abby and Howard did such a fantastic job. Our ceremony was in the cave at the follies, our reception was at the hotel. Our day was absolutely perfect and all our guests complimented all the work Abby and Howard did. The day ran smoothly and there was no stress or issues. The hotel was spotless and extremely clean. They moved our belongings to the bridal suite, and left us a lovely surprise when we retired to our room at night. The food was absolutely delicious. Food was delivered warm and in a timely manner. Abby even assisted me with setting everything up ready the day before my wedding. I cannot compliment Abby and Howard enough. Abby especially has been wonderful over the last 18 months of wedding planning. She has always been polite, responsive and so incredibly kind and welcoming to my family, guests and ourselves. Our wedding was a very long day and Abby and Howard were absolutely exceptional. We truly cannot thank you enough for giving us the wedding of our dreams. I would strongly recommend couples to get married at the follies, it an intimate wedding is preferred. It was beautiful and the views were just breathtaking. We had additional guests for our wedding breakfast, with further guests for our evening reception. All at the Hawkstone Park Hotel. Abby was very accommodating to our needs. Abby, Howard, we will never forget your kindness and hard work. Thank you both so much. We will forever be grateful. Highly recommend!!! x x x”

“Lovely Location in the heart of Shrewsbury High Street has outdoor seating during the nice months offers live music food and more would highly recommend this place for solo or a family visit!”
“What a gem of a local pub! Second time we have been here now and it has never failed to falter. The staff are amazing and so helpful and accommodating. Regulars in the the bar area are friendly and chatty. And the food is to die for. If its not on the menu, they will try to find it for you anyway. This is the only place we will eat now in Wem. Cheers guys”
