“My friends and I came to see the afternoon performance of a Christmas Carol on 14/12/25. This is one of my favourite films so the performance had a lot to live up too! It did not disappoint. Reece Dinsdale as Scrooge was outstanding. The whole cast was excellent as were the props (especially the ghost of Christmas future) All in all a lovely, entertaining afternoon. There was absolutely nothing to disappoint us. Thank you to all concerned in the production and the staff of the playhouse.”
“Good size. Not absolutely massive but cosy and a good number of seats. Well decorated. Well maintained, doesnt feel like its falling to bits like some theatres do. Good temperature (it was cold outside, we were warm enough for coats off but not sweating), good sound and view. Good location -easy for taxis to drop off but still near city centre”
“Staff were rude behind the bar but that's just standard... other staff were friendly, toilets had no toilet paper and dirty, drinks over priced... grease was amazing, absolutely loved it... not my favourite theatre but always good performances”
“Beautiful room, great location. Had a lovely overnight during our 2 week UK trip. We stayed in the 4 poster room - bed could have been a little more comfortable (thin mattress, no boxspring), but the room is sweet and the bathroom was nice and modernized with a spacious shower. The location is unbeatable - on a lovely quiet historic street while still being super close to the train station and great walking distance to the center. Self check in was seamless and easy. Would definitely recommend!”
“Great play. Jane Eyre . Great staff. Friendly and helpful. Cheap bar and theatre tickets”
“Pretty similar to any other theatre. No pros, no cons. However, there did actually seem to be enough toilets for the women for once!”
“Leeds Town Hall is a breathtaking architectural masterpiece nestled in the heart of the city. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of its Victorian-era design, complete with magnificent columns, intricate detailing, and a stunning concert hall. The building exudes a sense of history and importance, making it a must-visit for both tourists and locals alike. I had the pleasure of attending a performance in the concert hall, and the acoustics were truly exceptional, adding to the overall ambiance of the experience. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or the arts, Leeds Town Hall is a cultural gem that should not be missed.”
“What a great night. We arrived 30 minutes before the show and it was all well organised. We were told where to go while we waited to go to our seats. From the start of the show to the end, it was so entertaining with lots of laughs and audience participation, and we couldn't stop laughing. All the cast played such great characters, and they all had great personalities, which showed during their performance. You can't take photos during the show, but you have a lot of opportunities at the end. If you do nothing else while visiting York, please go and see this show. You won't be disappointed.”
“A brilliant night! First time at this venue and WOW. It’s beautiful, the sound is quality and the staff are lovely!”
“My mum and I travelled from Spain to see Gary Oldman in YTR's production of Krapp's Last Tape and we had the loveliest time. We were fortunate enough to attend three performances this week and everyone from Gisele & Gary to everybody working at YTR were the kindest every time. Since I live abroad I thought I might have difficulties to purchase tickets and pre-order merch but everyone at box office were incredibly helpful and made the process very very easy. It's an experience we'll never ever forget and I'm so thankful to YTR for making it happen. I strongly recommend visiting if you have a chance. Lovely theatre with lovely staff & crew.”
“Great thanks to Caroline who accommodated me, my partner and all our requests. We really enjoyed the performance and couldn’t have done it without her! Thanks again :)”
“Lovely theatre. Came to watch Stewart Lee the comedian. Bar staff were quick and efficient and the option to reserve drinks for the interlude was very helpful.”
“Such a beautiful building with intricate artwork and decoration.”
“We went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last night. Having seen the original London show several times, we were excited to see the musical again. We were not disappointed; the sets looked great, and the singing and dancing were excellent. It was the first time we'd been to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, but it won't be the last.”
“This place is an unwavering favourite. The food is mind blowing, the drinks are well chosen and the staff are truly wonderful. Even though they’re always so busy, they really have nailed the art of hosting. Special thanks to Ojis, Zac and Leandro and of course the wonderful manager Rob. I always look forward to coming back and love bringing visiting friends to this gem.”
“Beautiful building, and a great venue for the choir performance we saw. I imagine it would be a great wedding venue or for a party.”
“My first time visiting was for the northern ballets children’s performance of the ugly duckling with my 9 month old daughter and her 2 year old cousin. Both absolutely mesmerised throughout the whole performance. A great space and even us adults loved it.”
“A bar of genuine character. And an interesting soundtrack.”
“Absolutely love this venue. A hidden gem in York which offers theatre goers an intimate experience. The setting allows you to really feel part of what is onstage. We loved our recent visit and will be back as soon as we are able!”

“I've photographed a few weddings at the wonderful Huddersfield Town Hall and they have always been great. The staff and registrars are so helpful and friendly. The room has plenty of natural light and the staircase is great for photographs afterwards too. Can't wait to come back! Katie Byram Photography”
“Quite simply the best vegiburger I've had, ever. Chips were simple but cooked perfectly and well spiced. Service was very fast and friendly. Quirky interior, very informal and relaxing. Not too busy. Great for Saturday lunch.”
“We had a wonderful stay and couldn’t fault it. The hotel looked absolutely amazing at Christmas — beautifully decorated and with such a lovely festive atmosphere throughout. The food was delicious, clearly well prepared and presented, and really added to the overall experience. Staff were friendly and welcoming, making us feel comfortable from the moment we arrived. A great place to stay, especially over the festive period. We would definitely return and highly recommend it to others.”
