Pub classics in Manchester

“We hosted my partner's 30th here over the weekend and I cannot say a big enough thank you to the Tap! From start to finish, everyone was incredible. Paul was super helpful and responsive and the bar staff were amazing. We all had a great time, thanks so much!”

“Such a nice little pub to unwind, especially if you don’t want anything crazy for the night but just enjoying a drink with friends and have a great meal. Food is really nice and it came in fast. The staff is friendly and thoughtful. They have darts and table tennis so you can enjoy a game while at it too! Recommend.”

“Not able to judge the food (they dont sell any) or the atmosphere (as no one else was in) but the bar itself is wonderful. Only small, with an indoor upstairs seating area & a small section out front with tables & chairs (only good for dry days) Theres also a beer garden to the rear apparently (never tried it)? Although limited for bar space the beer selection is good. More often than not there are 3 locally brewed ales on cask & 8 beers on keg, which usually includes a dark one. Altrincham born & bred Iv'e been coming here since it opened in the early 2000s and despite both it sister bars closing (Chorlton & Liverpool) luckily this bar continues to trade. I wish there was a greater choice, but should you be unable to find something unsuitable on cask/keg, they also have a well stocked fridge with numerous craft ales so im confident you'll find something suitable. Not the cheapest of bars, but far from the most expensive. OK, its getting a little tired around the edges now & the downstairs disabled toilets could do with a bit of a face lift, but all that said I still highly recommend this place.”

“Next to the train station, so location is perfect if you traveling. The Eggs benedict with salmon was absolutely delicious. Eggs melted in my mouth and portion size was just right. The staff was attentive and polite. Cannot ask for more when looking to have great breakfast!”

“This pub is run by 2 honest good people , who don’t tolerate drugs on the premises , and bad behaviour , since owning the pub they have worked hard to make customers feel safe/welcome , and decent honest people all say the same”

“I took my friend to show him what I think is one of the most amazing pubs in Manchester, with great history, however when we visited at about 14.20 on Wednesday ( just in case the owner wants to speak to her ) the person behind the bar was the most miserable, unpleasant, uninterested bar person I have come across in a long time , she even struggled to ask for our order she was so disinterested Even when people were coming in from graduation, who were all very excited she just couldn’t be bothered speaking to anyone , apart from her friend at the end of the bar If I do visit again , and she is there we will just walk straight out and go somewhere we are welcome”

“Love this pub inside and out. It’s got so much history and charm. The building used to be the Manchester & Salford Children’s Mission back in Victorian times, where they ran a kitchen for kids and the homeless. Now it’s this brilliant underground pub, and you can still see the old glazed brick walls when you head downstairs, which just adds to the atmosphere. I’d love to see more of that story told inside. There are a few old photos up, but no info with them... a bit of context would make it even better. Doesn’t put me off going though, it’s still one of my favourite spots in Manchester.”

“Beautiful spot for some quiet drinks with friends and family, so far have had a great experience with the staff. Especially Sally who’d let us stay long after close to get us more drinks, excellent effort to make us enjoy our experience at this cosy pub.”

“Love the decor and vibe in the Rose & Monkey. Ambience is just right as can’t stand brightly lit pubs. Always great music playing in the background. Handy for both Northern Quarter and Ancoats.”

“Tried here for the first time today when we arrived we were greeted with open arms and seated straight away which was a shock because it was soooo busy..the food was really good with a very generous portion and really good value for money.. Drinks menu was massive and beer and cider was so cheap.. Excellent place and well worth a visit..”

“Went to see One Man 2 Governors last night. It was Fabulous, every part was superbly cast. Absolutely hilarious, literally laughed our socks off all the way through. What a great night night out. If I could change my plans this weekend I would go again. Thank you.”

“I stayed at The Lamb Inn for one night with a friend while visiting the Peak District. We arrived late, but the staff were very accommodating and provided us with the keys right away. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and breakfast was absolutely amazing—definitely a highlight of our stay. The only minor issue was that the shower leaked at the bottom, so the water didn’t drain properly. Other than that, everything was great. The inn is conveniently located for exploring the Peak District, though you will need a car to get around. We even spotted some Highland cows nearby, which was a lovely surprise. Overall, a comfortable and enjoyable stay—I’d happily recommend it for a visit to the area.”

“I would 100% recommend this place. £15 for a 3 course dinner is great value for money. The Yorkshire pudding starter was great. Recommend that! The rump steak was tender and lovely. Perfectly cooked. The burger was great with a plate full of chips too! If I was to be picky. The deserts could improve a little. The brownie was more like a dense cake. And wasn’t gooey, but was chocolatey. The sticky toffee pudding didn’t taste much of toffee. It needed more toffee sauce. However, I must state. Still nice and great value for money. I would go back and I look forward to as well.”

“Went for a family 50th birthday, pre booked online which was very easy to do. Tables ready as we arrived, staff attentive, very friendly and looked after us all really well. Food is lovely, catered for all ages and requirements. Staff even presented me with a birthday card and a beautiful dessert trio . Highly recommend.”

The cocktails were fantastic and themed to gaming, with the service behind the bar at the weekend fast, efficient and gorgeously presented. Plenty of places to sit and people watch if you are like me. 10/10 recommend.”
