“I didn’t have much hope after reading the reviews for Wigan CAMHS, but I want to share a more positive experience to give others hope. After my 9-year-old son began experiencing excessive panic attacks and palpitations, our GP advised us to go to A&E. But my son is a germophobe, and after waiting four hours in Bolton A&E, we were told it would be another five hours just to be seen by CAMHS. For his mental well-being, we had to leave. I feared we’d be lost in the system again—but to my surprise, we were given a telephone consultation and then an in-person assessment by CAMHS within 10 days. That’s when we met Catherine Gale, who was nothing short of a godsend. Within 20 minutes of meeting my son, she gently asked if he’d ever been assessed for autism after just 20 minutes of talking to him! He hasn’t been diagnosed, though we’ve been under the paediatrician since he was two due to his quirks. Catherine made me feel seen—as a parent who’s been struggling with her sons OCD, anxiety, panic attacks, and possible autism for seven long years with no support. More importantly, she saw my son. She spoke to him with genuine kindness and respect, and I think that allowed him to unmask, even just a little. Yes, the NHS is stretched and CAMHS is under immense pressure, but in just six months, they’ve done more for our family than the past seven years with the Wigan paediatric team. I’m so grateful—and I hope others find the help and compassion we did.”
