“Outstanding experience from start to finish. The welcome was genuine, service was swift, and the coffee was superb—rich flavour, perfect temperature, and silky milk. The café is spotless with a calm, relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to linger. After our earlier, underwhelming coffee and service at “Over The Rainbow,” this place completely turned our morning around. A true five-star café and an easy recommendation.”
“Best bacon sandwich ever, lovely flat white, I always pop in when I have time. Lovely welcoming staff as well, I need to sit in their garden one day for a full English”
“Good place to work with fast wifi, though not all tables have plugs. There's often children so it could get loud. Strong coffee.”
“Very substantial avocado on sourdough, lashings of bacon and a cool and tasty pistachio iced latte. A great brunch with excellent service!”
“Lovely place to visit. I really enjoyed the full English- eggs were perfect!!! But also really wanted the steak pie special nom nom nom”
“Nice to see this place after many years. My uncles bakery used to be where this cafe is, back in the 1970s/1980s. Spend many hours in the apartment above the shop, where they used to live.”
“We had the Catalan and Rillettes Galettes, and wow, they were so good! Really good size and filled to the brim. Definitely recommend trying one of these.”
“This is a tiny cafe above a bookshop. Both are queer spaces, full of flags, acceptance and super friendly staff. I can highly recommend the bi passionfruit cake. The cafe is a meeting place for young people who identify as LGBTQ+, so if you have an issue with them you're not at all welcome here. This cafe is absolutely perfect for students but, to reiterate, it is very small!”
“Absolutely fantastic little cafe right behind York Minster. It has about 3 tables (for two) inside the cafe but quite a good number of tables outside. We had coffee and cake, which were both excellent! Can totally recommend!”
“Beautiful building, and a great venue for the choir performance we saw. I imagine it would be a great wedding venue or for a party.”
“Great wee place near my hotel. Staff were lovely, and the food was so good, especially with a freshly made coffee. I also saw that it's dog friendly, which is fantastic. They had a variety of incredible cakes available too, and I got a fruit scone to take away with me. It was delicious! Definitely recommend it here.”
“What a great little find. We found this place after a brisk stroll in the park and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Friendly service, great atmosphere, yummy coffee and the best bit was that we had to wait 10 minutes for the scones to finish baking! Delicious!”
“We had a really lovely meal, remembering my father-in-law on what would have been his birthday. The food was amazing, and we were really looked after well by the staff. All 3 courses were delicious.”
“A gorgeous and very well priced coffee. Such a better atmosphere, price, and coffee than the chains. Friendly staff who were very kind and open to my friend with learning disabilities, which always leaves a good impression.”
“The burger is sooo good! Perfect for a late breakfast or brunch, super satisfying. The cozy atmosphere makes it even better!”
“Nice cafe which caters mainly for students Nicely decorated and has 3 seating eariers Ordered a capaccino ,tea, and to scones with jam for a total price of £13 The service was excellent. i definitely recommend this lovely cafe .”
“A wonderful place to eat and spend a few hours watching the traffic go by. So if you want to eat sandwiches while stood on the A64 trying to avoid getting run over and take in the wonder that is exaust fumes on a major road then this is the perfect place for you”
“Cannot fault it. Supermarket cafe serving really good coffee and tasty food. The waffles with bacon and maple were lovely with a generous amount of syrup. Reasonably priced too. If this review was helpful please give it a like below.”
“A lovely little cafe, well worth a visit. Should get a Licence and open with a full menu, it would do well Brunch and coffee was superb though”
“We stopped here for a late lunch and it was delicious! Would definitely recommend. Nice range of specials and menu items to choose from. Friendly staff. Would definitely return, thanks!”
“Came from Manchester today on the motorbike especially for their food. It was amazing as always. And the scones were delicious. See you again soon. Well worth the trip.”
“Lovely little quirky cafe, called in with husband and daughter on a Sunday afternoon. Food was really nice, myself and my husband ordered cheese and ham toasties with chutney, lovely thick slices of proper ham and thick slices of cheese. Our daughter ordered halloumi, avocado and hot honey bagel which she said was lovely. On the way out we spotted the cake counter and couldn't pass it by without taking a piece home. That too was delicious. We will definitely visit again when in the area.”
“Really delicious! Everything was freshly made and the seafood was top quality. The staff were super friendly and the airfield view was interesting! I'll definitely be back.”
“Visited here as part of York Restaurant Week. That chicken mandi was unbelievably tasty, can tell the right amount of seasoning was used. I could see the restaurant owner adjusting the lights to enhance the dining atmosphere, which I find very nice. I also had a soup with a spicy kick to it. Like others have commented, I never tried Yemeni food so made it even better.”
“When I came to York to meet my overseas friend, we had actually passed this place. Since then, I've often wondered what it was like. So, seeing as I was spending the day in York, I decided to take a walk to Gatehouse Coffee and try it out. Although it's not an overly big place, it's very quirky and worth a visit! There's some chairs inside, and then a number of tables and chairs outside, which is great when the weather is nice. The lady who served me was super pleasant, as was the two chaps in there too! Was nice to sit outside and relax for a while with a cappuccino. Would definitely come back here again, and a great stop-off if you're walking the York City Walls!”
“We booked this in advanced as no bookings on gate, so happy we did, it was fantastic! We had 2 adults and 1, 11 year old with us, and couldn't recommend enough!! We turned up at 09:45 and stayed until 1400, the Q lake was super clean and facilities - shower, toilets and changing rooms all well kept too. We stopped off at the cafe on our way back to the car and had pizza and chips - delicious!!! Food was fresh and tasted yummy! Next time we visit we will most likely camp over as well to make a weekend of it. We will be back!!! Thanks for a great experience Pool Bridge Farm.”
“A friend brought us here in the pouring rain. We were originally going to the other japanese restaurant for sushi, but decided to stay for their tea. We got the Yame Gyokuro and Kuromame cha. As my wife is a tea fanatic, I believe we can say that they were certainly high quality. The waiter said that the Kuromame was roasted in-house, and you can tell a lot of care was put into these teas as their flavours were superb and not very tannic. The yame gyokuro has a lovely umami taste and leaves a wonderful aftertaste in your mouth, and the kuromame cha, for a lack of a better term, tasted like a really light coffee without the bitterness. The waiter also recommended their mochi to go with it, and we got the yuzu mochi and matcha mochi. The matcha was perfectly sweet and done well. Sometimes restaurants burn their matcha but this was not the case. The yuzu mochi really stood out to me as a citrus lover. It had the brightness of an orange, and was not too overpowering, much like a gentle lemon zest. I highly recommend trying this. as it is one of my new favourites. After the tea and snacks we decided to stay. We had okonomiyaki and gyudon, which are something me and my partner make often at home. We're very picky eaters, so we were very surprised that it was delicious and tasted similar to the way we prepare them. I wasn't expecting the sake taste in the gyudon, and it definitely elevated the flavour. The okonomiyaki was equally as delicious and well cooked, although I wish we could have ordered a protein with it! We also ordered fried oysters with their yuzu tartar, and as a first time oyster eater, I want to say that they are extremely delicious and could not recommend them more. There is a gentle crisp crunch on the outside and then a nice tanginess from the tartar, and they just melt in your mouth. For dessert we had a matcha cream roll with strawberries, and this was also very well made. The matcha cake itself was not too sweet, and was balanced out by the sweetness of the cream and strawberries. They even reserved this cake for after we finished eating as there was only two left! Our waiter Homme was very kind to us and made sure that we were served well. We learned a little bit about York today as we do not live here, and their service to us was wonderful. They also explained in detail about our dishes and the way they are made. Truly made our night! Thank you for taking some time out of your busy schedule to talk to us. ☺️ We sat on the outside garden as well which has heaters to keep us warm and a lovely cozy japanese scenery of plants. The atmosphere here is lovely. I also strongly appreciate their small collection of artisan goods. I love when restaurants collaborate with independent artists! They had lots of essential japanese cooking goods as well, and I also grabbed some of their high quality tea on the way out. What was a bit of a miserable night turned into a great experience, and I couldn't have asked for a better Halloween evening. I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for authentic Japanese home-style cooking. Thank you Homme!”
“An absolutely wonderful experience with truly delicious food. The wild mushroom soup was a solid 12/10 absolutely outstanding! The rabbit liver could have been a bit crunchier, but the flavor was still excellent. My cousin had the “Gypsy-style pancake” and it was also absolutely delicious. The restaurant’s atmosphere and interior design are beautiful, and the view of the river makes it even more special. It was also great to chat with the staff in Polish - such a nice touch when you’re abroad and can still hear your native language while enjoying authentic, high-quality Polish cuisine. The service was superb: attentive, friendly, and made the whole experience even better. Highly recommended!”
