“A great family meal was enjoyed by all. The food was delicious and reasonably priced as were the drinks. It was very quiet for a Friday night so lacked some atmosphere. Staff were friendly and efficient. Recommended.”

“We had rather a long wait as it was half price steak but the staff and the service was very attentive and compensated us for the 40 minutes delay. Steaks were excellent dessert home made and delicious. Would recommend and certainly come again.”

“This pub was recommended by my parents as a good place for a meal and a real ale, on the day of the booking I admit to looking at the reviews and getting a bit worried, however I have got to say it did not disappoint, 5 (I think) Titanic beers plus 3 guest, the decor was traditional pub, with lovely Christmas lights, managed to find space in the car park too. The food was excellent, we had 5 different meals all really nice, steak, gammon, fish pie, fish and chips and a burger, real chips as well! Followes by 5 desserts, the crumble was a very good portion, and the stick toffee Christmas pudding was delicious. The lady who took our orders and delivered food was fantastic and provided great service all night. I would like to return in daylight so I can appreciate the countryside next time!”

“My daughter got married here recently and it was an absolutely amazing day. She married outside in the beautiful gardens which was so lovely. The food was absolutely delicious and the venue room looked fantastic. The evening food of pie and peas was delicious. The staff were lovely and very attentive to all our needs. We stayed the night the rooms very nice they were clean and the beds very comfortable and to round our stay off a great breakfast too.”

“Went to rose cottage last night for our lovely friends 80th birthday. Got seated on the party table, decorated for her birthday by the lovely Bev. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, food was amazing and the fizz offer was much appreciated. Fab evening, brilliant staff, especially Bev. Will I be back, deffo xxxx”

“Lovely Sunday lunch. Treated my mum on Sunday. Got a pork and a beef dinner, came with all the veg but cauliflower cheese and crackling were extra. Really good quality food. Lovely attentative service. Would go back.”

“I used to have a few pints in here from time to time. The real beers and ales were excellent. The staff were friendly and there was a lively atmosphere occasionally. Sports and leisure programmes were regularly on the television. There was space to drink outdoors as well. I've chilled out outside with a pint once or twice.”

“Popped in last week having delivered a job in Sheffield. Small cafe typical of places that I have spent years eating in. Good . Normal English full breakfast with toast and a mug of Tea. Well pleased with my breakfast. Not so good. Staff were reluctant to take Scottish fiver (plastic) . Thought the Scottish accent/ Scottish firm uniform & van outside might have been a giveaway that some Jock money might be heading your way but not keen. Normally I would have politely left ( just a thing I do) but persevered and found enough coins to scrape the meal. Thing is 99 % happy with my visit but it so early could have been 100. Still gave 5 star review though - too soft I am lol”

“Lovely clean room with comfortable bed and a great shower. The bonus of a mini fridge, kettle and toaster made the stay even better. Communication from the host was great and everything about checking in was straight forward. Lovely building and great view of the castle. Highly recommend!”

“A day drink as a treat, been in 3 times now, over many weeks, so this, the third.....I can't actually believe I need to say this in 2023, but here we are. Totally brilliant to walk in on your own (1pm ish each time on a Friday)...so chilled, proper lovely staff, comfortable....it's a small thing being happy to go into a pub alone, but they make it great. Not tried at night, maybe one day. Clean, warm, comfortable, lovely staff, freezing out but this is warm, anonymous feeling in a good way...a place to just chill...even as a lass just taking a moment! Thank you!”

“Last night I was the caller with the J J Galway ceilidh band at a 40th birthday party held upstairs in the Assembly Rooms. We had a great time, even if the only "beer" available was John Smith's at £3.60 a pint. The venue is a little hard to find, but repays the effort.”
