    Corn Exchange

    ★★★★☆ 4.7
    Open

“The Corn Exchange in Wallingford is a delightful gem nestled in the heart of the town centre. Housed in a beautiful Grade II listed building dating back to 1856, it’s a venue that seamlessly fuses historical charm with vibrant contemporary arts. Whether you’re catching a film, a local play, or a live performance, the experience is always warm, welcoming, and memorable. Run largely by passionate volunteers, the atmosphere is refreshingly friendly and community-driven. Staff go out of their way to make you feel at home, and the intimate size of the auditorium creates a lovely, cosy setting to enjoy theatre or cinema. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like part of something local and special. The programming is impressively varied. The Corn Exchange screens a mix of mainstream and independent films, hosts regular live performances (including five productions a year by the talented Sinodun Players), and puts on an eagerly anticipated pantomime every January. Matinee performances are also a nice touch, catering to those who prefer earlier showings. Technically, the venue doesn’t disappoint either – with high-quality digital projection and surround sound ensuring an immersive viewing experience. There’s also a small bar and coffee shop on-site, perfect for a pre-show drink or a catch-up afterwards. Highly recommended – a cultural treasure in the heart of Wallingford.”

“We went to see the show ‘It will be alright on the night’ a ray Cooney production. This was the first time we had been since the sit down menu change at the theatre. Very impressed. Lovely food, comfy seats and table service. Staff were brilliant and we had plenty of time to eat before the show. The show was outstanding, very funny and we all had a wonderful evening. We also went at Christmas to see White Christmas and again the show was outstanding and perfect for this time of year. 100 recommend a visit to this wonderful theatre.”

Leg room in some of the seats were a problem for my hubby due to knee replacements so would suggest an aisle seat or those with no one in front of you. Disabled parking right outside . “The Anvil is an amazing community venue which my family and I have visited many times. However, yesterday was a first whereby we volunteers at Abbey Court independent living, a Vivid Homes property, accompanied a number of residents, including a wheelchair user, to see Aladdin….”oh yes we did!” ( I know, sorry!). I wanted to let everyone know that firstly the show was amazing, secondly our party absolutely loved it and last but not least that the staff both at the door and the lady near our seats were incredibly helpful and conscientious. A truly great experience. Thank you.”

    Shaw House

“A very interesting survival which has been repurposed as a conference and wedding venue which seems to be working very well as a means to preserve the fabric of the building. As is often the case which this type of building where local government has heroically stepped in to preserve a valuable piece of built heritage, the original contents are long gone and the interior reflects the history of varied uses but there it's lots to see here in terms of the interesting historical fabric and the exterior is spectacular. Thumbs up for the quite long opening season too - English Heritage could take note with some of their winter closing times. There is reconstruction work going on outside to recreate some formal garden features and there are modern visitor facilities. Also good exhibition space on the first floor - one of the English Civil War era battles of Newbury took place here more or less in the front garden and you can read all about that aspect of the history along with seeing some artefacts, weapons, armour and other items. I the day we visited, the Sealed Knot were having an event day and this featured social and civilian living History (including musical and dance) as well as drill and musketry demonstration ( and the Scottish armies of the Wars of the three Kingdoms were in attendance too, not just the English), so that adds to the experience if you attend on an event day. I think they are regularly in attendance. Pop into town if you have the chance - Newbury is well worth strolling around the canal and seeing the museum - an easy trip from West London.”

    Regal Picturehouse

“Outstanding 3-screen cinema, conveniently situated in the heart of Henley-on-Thames, very close to a large car park - £3 for 3 hours parking. The staff are all friendly and very helpful. They make you feel at home immediately. From the cosy coffee shop located on the ground floor to the cafe bar on the first floor, the Regal Picturehouse feels both luxurious and homely. Both the ground floor and first-floor cafe seating areas afford pleasant views of the surrounding town. The tea and coffee we purchased tasted very nice indeed. The screening rooms, like everything else, are kept scrupulously clean. The seats are comfortable, with plenty of leg room. The sound is loud enough but not too loud and crystal clear. The adverts before the film, not too long at all. The toilets are clean and well-appointed and offer up hand lotion as well as liquid soap. A nice touch. There is a customer lift as well as stairs to the first floor. There is an option to become a member, which as well as offering plenty of benefits with regards to the cinema, also includes discounts for patronising local businesses in the town. Regal Picturehouse, Henley, comes very highly recommended indeed.”
