Best food and wine in Chester

“the boba here is fantastic. tastes great, made quickly and cheaper than a lot of other places. iirc it was around £4.50-£5 for a large which is a lot cheaper than other places i’ve been to that’s offered a smaller portion. the shop itself is spotless and offers a wide selection of different food and snacks.”

“We popped to Hoole a few weeks back and had seen this restaurant and said we'd come back and try it. So we did and oh my days it was so delicious. The portion sizes were huge. There is an option to choose half portions which I thought was a lovely idea and great for lunch times if you didn't want a big meal. We will definitely be coming back”

“The menu is great. Many options that you won't easily find together somewhere else. We got a Chateaubriand which is served for 2, and it was great as medium cooked. I would prefer it in thinner slices, but this one was also OK. Juicy, soft, and pink inside. We also got sides of Slow-Cooked Beef Shin and Stuffed Bone Marrow. Bone Marrow could be too fatty for some, but for me it was great as is. Beef Shin was a bit sweet, of being caramelized, i guess. I just didn't like that every single thing in the menu is served with some big amount of grilled/fried onion which I think is the signature of the venue. It was with every single thing we ordered - and it's too much of it at the end. With the desserts, they have quite a lot options again. we got creme brule and biscuit torte. Biscuit torte was a bit too sweet but creme brule was amazing. You also have options of ordering mini-desserts with hot drink costing only 6.50 and I liked this opiton. What I ordered was a full size of it and I guess it might be too big for some after eating that much. What I didn't like regarding the venue is the service which makes you wait quite a long time for only asking for your order. It was too much of allowance for us to think :) Also, we have been seated to a table which was dark due to the lamp which wasn't working. I was told that the lamp was broken for some reason whan I asked that to be turned off - because it was just too dark without that working. And I didn't like that the staff had me seated there knowing it wasn't working while we had some other options. We had been seated to somewhere else then. The price is higher than most of the steak houses in the city, but for an understandable reason after having this experience. You can park your cark in the parking area of the court cross the street. Not an effort to complain for walking to the venue from the parking area.”

“Visited near Christmas in an afternoon for lunch. The food was really nice - and a little bit more unusual for what you'd normally expect from a 'tourist attraction' type place! The staff were friendly and helpful with assisting with a gluten intolerance that one of our party has. Would definitely recommend for if you are visiting Chester Zoo!”

“Amazing experience! Everything was 10/10. The atmosphere is lovely, it's in such a lovely spot. The staff were amazing, we went for my birthday and they gave us several drinks on the house, all specially selected to couple well with each course. “One of the best wine merchants in the country. The Chester branch is housed in an art deco former auction house. It doesn't have the character of the Shrewsbury head office cellar warehouse but is light and airy. There are other good independent wine merchants in Chester and Liverpool areas, and plenty of choice in supermarkets and stores, Tanners however is a treat to visit. Whether you buy a £10 bottle, a 15 or £16, or spend potentially vastly more you are almost guaranteed to get a good or very good bottle of wine. Regular prices start at about 9.50. I've rarely had an own label from this wine merchant that isn't good, & worth the price. Especially recommend their choice of French, Portuguese and some Spanish.”

“So much unusual regional European choice , good prices and tastings too. Of course beers feature too. Too much to chose from and I always buy more than intended, but again not disappointed. However Scotch Whisky appears to have quite expensive options.”

“The girls and I came to Bar Lounge as it was recommended by our friend that lives in Chester and it was lovely. The weather was gorgeous so we were able to sit outside and the atmosphere was great. The food and wine was delicious and Nick was so friendly and welcoming, he couldn’t do enough for us. We will definitely be back when in Chester again, thank you!”

“Classic Chester city centre pub with low beams and darker interior although the music livened the place up nicely. Enjoyed my visit and a decent selection of real ales and candles lit on all the tables adding to a nice relaxing vibe. Looks historical on the outside and even more so after you enter.”

“Very much enjoyed a sweet treat and fruit juice on my visit. The service was perfect and all the staff attentive and friendly. The surroundings; a little bit of old fashioned luxury. I was seated at 11.45am and the restaurant was really starting to fill up by 12.15pm so I would recommend booking in advance if possible. The caramel, chocolate and crumble tart shown was heavenly!”

“Ordered for pickup in Helsby, very easy to find. I have missed decent pizza - Frodsham does have places that do pizza but they're very meh. This though...the base is light with the perfect combination of crispy and chewy. Delicious high quality toppings scattered on top, infinitely superior to the other joints nearby. Skip your regular place and head down to pick up the best pizza for miles.”

“Started the day here for a friend's 50th birthday and watch the rugby. Very clean, comfy place, lots of room and seating. Friendly staff and great range of drinks, even quality whisky, bonus for me and would definitely visit again Did eat here so can't comment on the food”

“Nachi is a great shop. The Sri Lankan staff are always very friendly and have smiles on their faces. Sometimes their stock is a little low particularly on cigarettes, and the Silk Cuts are overpriced at almost £15 for 20 if I remember correctly but the other cigarettes are more reasonably priced and they have good deals on frozen ready meals, sausage roll-type things and the opening hours are great. The prices are very good in general.”

“Great hotel on the outskirts of Chester. Approx 15 min drive to the zoo, Cheshire oaks and Chester city centre. Was slightly worried after booking as read some reviews that didn't rate this hotel but we found it great. Staff very friendly and always happy to help. Bar area nice, breakfast and bar food we had very tasty. Room clean and tidy. Had a problem with the room door not working properly but the handy man arrived promptly and sorted very quickly. Pool and gym facilities looked lovely but didn't use on this occasion. Would stay again.”
