“Needed a good pair of trainers to start training for my first marathon. I am very heavy on my feet, suffer with arthritis in my hips and lower back, so needed something that offered a lot of support and that would take most of the impact. Had a great service from Jack, left the shop with what I hoped was the correct trainers. Three runs done, and I can honestly say they are spot on. Running is so much easier with the correct foot wear. Thanks Jack. I'll be back.”

“I had my grandson staying with us for the weekend and wanted to get him a bike. I tried Halfords in Newbury but it was too much trouble for them to assemble it. We went to Decathlon in Reading and a guy called Mo looked after us and he couldn't have been more helpful. He made sure my Grandson had the right bike and fitted it with all the accessories for us within about 20 minutes. It was a great experience - highly recommended.”

I live all the way out in South Africa and I managed to purchase a travel trunk online (the last one available in the UK) from this store. The store manager, Grace Tucker, has been nothing short of brilliant! From managing the transaction to personally delivering it to my forwarding address, constantly checking in with me regarding the details and shipping confirmation. “An amazing store with a range of clothing and tools for all sorts of outdoor activities. When i visited I was looking for a tent and some new walking boots, Richard immediately asked if I needed help or If he could look something up for me. Whilst asking about boots Richard offered to show me some new boot measuring device that they had and the following conversation was fascinating (I had never thought so much about what kind of shoes/ boots I should be wearing) he explained everything I needed to know and allowed me to try on everything I asked about and even brought his own recommendations to the table. My experience there today was fantastic and I certainly plan to return to pick myself up some new boots.”

“Did a gait analysis today to buy some trainers for knee pain when walking and was very impressed. The lady that conducted it was very knowledgeable and kind. First I was given a pair of 'neutral' trainers to wear and asked to roll up my jeans so that the camera could see my ankles. Then I was asked to get on the treadmill, turn it on and increase the speed until I was at a slow jog. After I'd jogged for about 30 seconds I was told to stop it and was then shown the resulting video which showed that my gait was definitely overpronated. I was then asked to choose a show from the stability range and the lady quickly went round the back and got my size. We repeated the exercise and you could see this time that my calves were much better aligned. The whole thing only took 15 minutes and I was incredibly impressed with how smooth and efficient it all was.”

Jonathan who must have the best selection in Reading sorted out my husband with a beautifully made Italan suit and shoes. An hour or so in Jonathan's shop brings to mind the way retailing used to be and still is at Demain 1953.”

“Kind and very knowledgable staff. I visited after getting caught in a storm on a hiking trip. The staff saw how shook up I was and offered me a towel to dry off. They then helped me select a great quality pair of shoes, which were very comfortable and perfect for the weather conditions/terrain ahead. Took her time showing me a variety of shoes, and also informed me of various local running clubs. Completely fair prices and I will be visiting again once my new pair of Brooks' wear out! Possibly could have a slightly greater range of running shoe? That's purely related to contracts with different brands so probably out of their control. However you could say that about a LOT of running shops and it did not halter my experience in the slightest. Pleasant experience in a great location. Fab staff.”

Staff are helpful, even for finding additional sale items. Thoroughly recommend for DoE/Scout Awards expedition clothing. Tents, would still go for Black's own brand.”
