    Center Parcs Sherwood Forest

    ★★★★☆ 4.5 (12,623 Reviews) Top rated Open

“Our first time doing a Center Parcs holiday and absolutely will be returning again. A wonderful (if somewhat pricey) half term break for the family. Our 2 and 10 year olds had an absolute whale of a time, and my wife and I came back feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Our cabin was clean, well laid out and had all the accoutrements needed for a fully self catered holiday. We did eat in many of the restaurants which were quite expensive for what they were, but with the exception of The Dozing Duck (which had the worst steak I've ever had the misfortune of eating), kept the family happy. Activities were great for our 10 year old. Spa was really nice. Site was easy to navigate on bike and very peaceful. The pool was amazing, with plenty of slides and activities for all ages. Pro tip: for the raft slides, it's quiet after 7pm, so evening vists are recommended. Changing facilities were surprisingly clean for being so busy. All in all, top tier holiday. Obviously far cheaper to do during term time, and pricey during school holidays. But I would happily pay that premium to avoid airport hassle.”

    Heanor Memorial Park

    ★★★★☆ 4.5 (303 Reviews) Top rated Open

“Heanor Memorial Park Heanor Memorial Park is a spacious and attractive green space with plenty to offer visitors. The beautifully maintained gardens are seasonally refreshed with vibrant bedding plants, while a variety of mature trees and open grassy areas provide a peaceful and relaxing environment. Whether you're looking for a tranquil spot to sit or a scenic place to walk, the park offers plenty of benches and open space to enjoy. A Living Memorial: The Park’s History In the aftermath of World War II, the local community sought a meaningful way to honor the men who had lost their lives. Rather than erecting a traditional stone monument as had been done after World War I, the vision this time was to create a "living memorial"—a public park that could be enjoyed by all. At a public meeting held in October 1945, it was decided that unused land near the town centre would be developed into the memorial park. The project was funded entirely by public donations and community fundraising efforts, and included a traditional war memorial at its heart. The park was officially opened on April 28, 1951, by the Duke of Devonshire. A cross-denominational dedication service emphasized the inclusive nature of the memorial. In 1974, ownership of the park was transferred to Amber Valley Borough Council. Later Additions and Improvements In the 1980s, a plaque was added to the war memorial to honor those who died in the Falklands Conflict of 1982. Over the years, the park has seen several enhancements, including the installation of a bandstand and modern play facilities, making it a welcoming space for all ages. Interesting Facts Historic Gates: The park’s impressive main entrance gates were originally the Derby Lodge entrance to the now-demolished Shipley Hall. A second set of gates, located opposite the Miners' Welfare, also came from Shipley Hall’s gardens. Both sets of gates were refurbished in 2010, preserving a piece of local heritage.”

“Nice area for a daily walk, anytime of the year, around the lake with the dog or just to sit and watch the wildlife go by. The Lake is in front of Kirk Hallam Community Academy and the meadows stretch all the way to the Nut Brook trail. Tracks are well maintained around the Nut Brook trail and are used for walking and cycling. During the wet season the meadows get flooded but again nice to see when frozen and snow is lying on the ground. Once a year the Friends of Kirk Hallam Lake and Meadows put on a Lakeside Summer Fair, where many stalls are put up around the lake for people to look at and buy goods of all different kinds. There is usually a band playing and places for you to eat and drink. Keep an eye out for this event, around the beginning of July, you will not be disappointed”

The playground is a good size with lots for children to do and as they grow older there's a teenagers park 3 minutes away on Bridgfoeld park. “My daughter joined Core Aquatics in September 2020 and I can honestly say, it's amazing and fantastic swimming school. My daughter is severely autistic, practically non verbal and has very restricted social communication skills but despite all of that Nicole and swimming teachers found unique way to teach and show the joys of swimming. From a child who was terrified to get inside a swimming pool she now enjoys her lessons, she can swim independently on her front, back (which she hated for long time), she even can dive underneath the water. Core Aquatics is one of the best things that happened in my daughters life, it's absolutely brilliant. Olga”

“I would highly recommend East Midlands Swim Academy, my daughter has been swimming with them for 3 years and has shown fantastic progress. All of the teachers are friendly and professional, and with relatively small group sizes are really able to focus on each child and adapt to their individual needs. What really stands out for me is it’s not just about how far you can swim, but more the technique that is used. The pools are very well maintained and extremely clean.”
