“We travel to Sophia Gardens form Cornwall to officiate at the judo competitions. We came across The Plough and decided to give it ago for dinner one evening. And since that first time we return here every time we are in Cardiff. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The menu is varied enough for everybody to find something they like. The food is well presented, hot (unless its a salad) and deliciously tasty. Even when very busty we have never been overlooked or forgotten. The staff are very attentive. Highly recommended.”

“We were an hour late to our reservation due to traffic and we spoke to the restaurant over the phone and they kindly held our table. The decor and ambience in the restaurant was so lovely and it had a real homely feel with traditional Christmas trees and decorations. The meal we had was delicious and so fresh and the service was excellent also. We would strongly recommend The Maltsters Hotel and we will definitely be back.”

I am in love with their carvery. It may be an addiction. The cakes especially are out of this world, and it's only a bonus that we get to take a slice home every time!”

“We came today, Sunday 3rd. Lisa was absolutely brilliant, even though she was rushed off her feet! She was so lovely and attentive, and nothing was too much trouble. “I have been going to the Highfields for many years, it has an amazing community atmosphere and the people are very friendly. The staff and management are lovely and very welcoming, always ready to have a chat and some laughs. The customer service is excellent. The pub has a large bar, a skittle alley which also has a dart board and a pool table, these are always popular. The lounge has recently been decorated and already hosted some great parties. Highly recommend this pub 10 out of 10!”

The presentation was elegant, and each dish tasted as good as it looked. Breakfast offered a wide variety of options to suit all tastes, while lunch and dinner felt like fine-dining experiences. The service was prompt and attentive, and the chefs clearly take great pride in their work. Without a doubt, the food alone is reason enough to stay at this hotel again. Highly recommended!”

“I've been eating at this place for over 35 years ( changed hands a couple of times in that time). It's convenient for me, as I travel to and from Newport regularly by bus. I've tried quite a few of the dinner options on the menu ( there is a varied choice), with the current owners and have enjoyed everything. The food is always served quickly and hot. My favourite is the home made chicken curry...absolutely delicious. Once I'd tried it, I've never ordered anything different.”

“Have been here several times over the past year and each time the staff are always really nice and the coffee is good. Really appreciated this morning the guy serving brought my coffee and cake over whilst I was sorting myself out with laptop etc at a table. This is my go to coffee shop in Newport.”

“We had a brilliant family get-together here last Sunday. We booked at short notice and the staff were so accommodating even giving us a private area for our party of 17, where we were also able to watch the football. Everybody ate and the food and service was superb! Also great value. Would highly recommend and look forward to going back.”

“This may seem a strange occasion for leaving a review, but we had the post-funeral wake for my mum at the Ridgeway recently and they looked after us as well as we could have asked. We booked the cold buffet and this was excellent. A range of well filled sandwiches and rolls (we asked for veg and non-veg), quiches, salad, and some delicious delicacies, and then cakes to follow. It was more than enough for the numbers we ordered, even with many going back for more. The service was excellent. A very busy bar was looked after very efficiently by the staff, who were friendly and helpful through the afternoon and evening. No one wants to plan for a wake, but the team at the Ridgeway looked after us beautifully.”

“Me and my partner visited today (4th of October). We enjoyed so much, girl servicing was so nice, polite and helpful. Food was outstanding!!!! I've had steak which was exactly as I like it, there was no trouble when we asked for my chips to be cooked a bit more, Dave had mix grill, everything was cooked to perfection!!!! Beer was nice too. We will highly recommend this pub to everyone. Thank you very much.”

“Spot on location. Hotel was spotless inside and out. Beautiful kept garden at the back of property. We stayed in room 8 sea veiw room at the top. Views were amazing. Room was very clean and well equipped, bathroom was stunning. I highly recommend a stay. Plenty of restaurants in area. Brilliant walks.”

“Me and my family had a lovely visit to the newly refurbished Captains Wife! The food, service and ambiance was all perfect! I would definitely recommend! The roast potatoes were beautifully cooked, I went for the trio and all the meat was so succulent and tasteful! We will definitely be back! “Cracking little pub and has turned around from previous visits. Staff are very friendly and even allowing changes to meals as I don't like BBQ sauce so swapped to hot sauce for my hunters chicken. Very good value for money and a reasonable pace for food. Look forward to my next visit”

“went in with my little brother and got water, chocolate cake and iced vanilla matcha. he really enjoyed the cake. matcha was a decent price and worth the value. great balance of matcha and sweetness and was the perfect size. although i don’t think its freshly made. music could’ve been a bit louder but the staff was lovely. place looked clean and wasn’t too crowded.”

“I like this hotel. The staff I encountered were friendly and helpful and, because I like dogs, I enjoyed seeing loads of them everywhere. Breakfast was good quality and plentiful. It’s true that the place is looking a little tired in places but it’s excellent value.”
