“We travel to Sophia Gardens form Cornwall to officiate at the judo competitions. We came across The Plough and decided to give it ago for dinner one evening. And since that first time we return here every time we are in Cardiff. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The menu is varied enough for everybody to find something they like. The food is well presented, hot (unless its a salad) and deliciously tasty. Even when very busty we have never been overlooked or forgotten. The staff are very attentive. Highly recommended.”

“We were an hour late to our reservation due to traffic and we spoke to the restaurant over the phone and they kindly held our table. The decor and ambience in the restaurant was so lovely and it had a real homely feel with traditional Christmas trees and decorations. The meal we had was delicious and so fresh and the service was excellent also. We would strongly recommend The Maltsters Hotel and we will definitely be back.”

“Me and my family had a lovely visit to the newly refurbished Captains Wife! The food, service and ambiance was all perfect! I would definitely recommend! The roast potatoes were beautifully cooked, I went for the trio and all the meat was so succulent and tasteful! We will definitely be back! “Stayed here on 08th April as we had family staying local. The atmosphere was amazing there was a comedian on who was hilarious!! The owners Gareth and Tash were absolutely sound! “Cracking little pub and has turned around from previous visits. Staff are very friendly and even allowing changes to meals as I don't like BBQ sauce so swapped to hot sauce for my hunters chicken. Very good value for money and a reasonable pace for food. Look forward to my next visit”

“Beautiful pub in a lovely location. My children had three courses which were very well proportioned and they really enjoyed everything they had. Me and my partner had the Sunday roasts which were absolutely stunning. I also had the chocolate fondant for dessert which was gorgeous! Amazing food, brilliant service from all the staff and a lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be visiting again. My daughter even asked if we could go there for all our food!! We completed our walk over Caerphilly Mountain and Trig Point and could see for miles over the Egwysian, Caerphilly, the Bristol Channel, Steel Holm, flat Holm and Cardiff. “I have been going to the Highfields for many years, it has an amazing community atmosphere and the people are very friendly. The staff and management are lovely and very welcoming, always ready to have a chat and some laughs. The customer service is excellent. The pub has a large bar, a skittle alley which also has a dart board and a pool table, these are always popular. The lounge has recently been decorated and already hosted some great parties. Highly recommend this pub 10 out of 10!”

“My wife and I had the absolute pleasure of staying at The Coal Exchange on the 8th of August 2025, and we honestly can’t speak highly enough of the entire experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and professionalism. A big thank you to Jamie on reception, who was incredibly friendly and polite – he made us feel instantly welcome and set the tone for a fantastic stay. Our room was stunning – beautifully decorated, spacious, and spotlessly clean. The highlight was definitely the spa bath in the room, which added a luxurious and relaxing touch to our evening. It was the perfect way to unwind. We also had the chance to dine at the hotel’s restaurant, and the food was nothing short of amazing. Every dish was full of flavour and beautifully presented. Special mention goes to restaurant managers Haley and Sam T, who were both outstanding – attentive, professional, and clearly passionate about delivering a great dining experience. All in all, The Coal Exchange exceeded our expectations in every way. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!”

“Lovely hotel over looking the river Severn, the staff are welcoming and we even got offered a lift to the station from the owner. We stayed here as was far cheaper than Cardiff with Ed Sheeran in concert on and only a 15 minute train trip to the city centre. Yes we would definitely stay here again.”

“Food was absolutely amazing, everything was full of flavour and cooked perfectly. The steak could be pulled apart with no effort. The desert was also full of flavour. The only downside to all of it was the portion size, I would have loved to have more. The service was quick and the waiters were polite and helpful. I’d definitely go again. The menu was quite small but I think the quality of the food makes up for it. We had 2 soft drinks (pints), 2 mains and a dessert and it came to £60.”
