“Ali on reception Is and was fantastic!. He was professional and very friendly and helpful. I think my room number was 316 when I encountered a problem with the use of the shower/bath he was very helpful with this helping me being later in the evening on a Saturday...Room was spotlessly clean, comfortable and quiet! I highly recommend this hotel! Thanks again Ali!...”
“We had a really good experience here in June / July, stayed for the week. Staff were nice. Room was clean enough, bathroom a bit on the smaller side and not cleaned properly. Great view and great location. Bedroom good size and the bed very comfortable.”
“Stayed here as a large group of friends, the place is under new management and therefore quite hectic at the moment, but the manager was so incredibly helpful and helped us so much with anything we needed, including extra duvets etc!! The place is old, however, so windows are a bit draughty but a heater was provided in the room and once we used that, it was very toasty!! Beautiful sea view from the room, could not recommend this enough if you’re a young group of friends with somewhere cheap needed to stay!!”
“Absolutely loved this place. It's very unique, niche, quirky, punky and fun. So much detail in the room. Bar was fun, breakfast was good. Wish I could have stayed longer.”
“What a beautiful boutique hotel , absolutely loved our stay and 100% going back and highly recommend !! On arrival we were warmly greeted by the lovely staff. Absolutely loved our room , as we walked into our room there was a dinning table , a bar area , and lounge area , and an upstairs where there was a really comfortable bed , a stunning bath at the end of the bed , and a cinema room . In the morning we had a stunning breakfast brought to our room . ( lovely touch) We visited Brighton for an event , but left a little early just so we could enjoy the room more and so glad we did ! Thank you for a lovely stay and we look forward to visiting again soon !”
“Really lovely small hotel very close to the sea front. Quirky details. Spotlessly clean. Beautiful bathroom and big fluffy white towels. We were made to feel really welcome. And breakfast was delicious.”
“Pretty much everything about a recent stay here was excellent. Location couldn't be more central to everything in Brighton. The room was super clean, well laid out and you can tell thought has gone into the guest experience, everything we needed was there. It's certainly not the biggest space, but for a weekend break when you're spending your time in Brighton, you won't need anything more...although the shower cubicle I found just a little too small for my size, but done the job. There were some really nice touches they added for Pride weekend too the room and we had super friendly check too. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat!”
“Lovely luxury rooms. Beautifully decorated and fantastic size. Bathroom had both shower and bath. Everything supplied for your stay. Price should include full English breakfast not just a continental. Would stay again”
“I couldn't recommend the Southern Belle more highly. The hotel is beautifully decorated, short walk from the lanes with absolutely lovely food. The best thing is the staff and atmosphere though - this made our stay really special and gives the bar downstairs a real local vibe. Will definitely be back!”
“I joined Wickwoods in May 2024 and at the time, I had just been diagnosed as diabetic and really struggled to 'enjoy' any kind of gym I had ever joined before, very quickly cancelling my membership as I found it boring. Something had to change and I won't lie, when I initially signed up to Wickwoods it was not easy given the price but what I can honestly say is that in hindsight, it was one of the best decisions I ever made and it is worth every penny. I find the variety of classes, gym and racquet sports help keep me engaged and 18 months on I'm going 5/6 times a week and loving it, it's a great place to be for my mental health and I've reversed that diabetes also. The staff are so pleasant and I've made some great new friends also. If you are thinking about joining, I wouldn't waste any time in doing so, you won't regret it.”
“Attended with friends, the night before a friends marriage! Prawn cocktail to start with delicious, the chocolate dessert with honeycomb was exceptional. I had the sea breem fish as a main course, which was a special, and exquisite. Highly recommend the side of garlic broccoli and a skinny fries. We were a table of 4, waiters/waitresses were young but didn’t show any signs of inexperience. I have played golf at ESN and lived in Uckfield for over 30 years and this is my first time eating here from recollection. It’s not cheap but the food is great, a nice little treat. I popped upstairs to have a look at my friends room after curiosity, great size and nicely presented (the room). Has everything you could possibly need and more. The furniture is of its time but equally in great condition which adds to the experience.”
“Elegant colonial style hotel with modern comforts whilst retaining period features, set in the South Downs National Park in the picturesque idyllic historic village of Alfriston. Highly recommend booking early and going for a room with a veranda access which had perfect views over the gardens at the National park. Set close to the sea, vineyard and the quaint village shops and restaurants which are all wonderful. We ate in the private dining room on the first night with a group where the food was spectacular. My lamb was a standout dish that I'll remember along with the white chocolate mousse. The rooms were immaculate and had a coffee maker and tea area. We could have done with a few more hangers and hooks in the bathroom to hang towels. Staff were friendly and accommodating. If you plan to go out till late, take a front door key as they lock the doors at 10pm. Breakfast was delicious and flexible as they can add/remove items upon request without fuss. Continental selection was limited but gluten free and vegan options are available on request. There is a guests only first come first serve car park to the rear, which had enough space for us and we didn't struggle to park. Beautiful place that was a wonderful place to relax, enjoy and stay. Highly recommend.”
“We shared a meal last evening before going to the Hurst festival comedy night, staff ensured we were fed and watered all in good time. Food was fantastic and service brilliant as always. A real treat.”
“Had a Friday night at Drakes. Staff were wonderful and the room was great - huge pillows and lovely bedding. Also location was excellent for the seafront and shopping.”
“Had a fab time on NYE with hazel as our server, experience was amazing and very comfortable. Hazel was very welcoming and a treat to talk to. Food was great too!”

“Lovely hotel right on the South Downs Way. We enjoyed the sun in the garden, the squirrels running around, the guest lounge with honesty bar and a great breakfast in the morning. I’d definitely recommend staying here!”
“This is a fabulous hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. They made me feel very welcome and they were lovely with my dog. The room was very comfy and clean with an outside door and a patio overlooking the heated swimming pool. Alfriston itself is a lovely place to visit with lots of very welcoming, very old pubs. The hotel is a great centre to visit Alfriston.”
“We had an impromptu bar lunch here. Dog friendly. Gorgeous soup, tasty braised venison and focaccia bread which was honestly the best I've ever tasted..honey and fennel seeds. Lovely woodland walks around. Will now plan to come back”
“The Star is simply superb. Excellent service, atmosphere, food and drinks. Our rooms were also very comfortable. The staff are clearly very well trained. Whilst it’s not the cheapest, the value for money is good. We will return, hopefully in the winter when we can fully enjoy the log fires. I don’t recognise the experience of some reviewers, if you expect pub prices, go to a pub not a luxury boutique hotel.”
“We stayed 4 nights in a ground floor double room. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Room was nice and spacious, bed was comfortable. It was hot week and they kindly put a fan in the room. The lounge is relaxing and comfortable with a nice outlook onto steyne gardens. The breakfast is amazing, can't fault it. Excellent choice and quality plus the service is top class. Staff are really nice and helpful, we didn't get everyone's names but big hi to Vicky and Tim. We will definitely stay again next time we're down that way from Essex. Best wishes Ian and Denise.”
“We had a brewery experience day with zak the brewer on Saturday 15th November. On arrival we knew it would be a great day as greeted by zak with bacon sarnies and coffee quickly prepared. The brewery room was cozy and felt perfect for a personal day for the 3 of us. The day was hands on and the samples during the day made it flow well. Zak was full of knowledge, good humour and great personal service. He is a huge asset to the company and the whole day. Lunch was served at a good time and come to us all within our own private brewing room. To finish the day we had a choice of our own beer to take away. We will be back again to see zak and see what else we can brew. Overall the day was more than great. It was amazing. Richard worthing.”
“Lovely location and good quality rooms. Great value. Breakfast was good. No bar and restaurants for lunch or evening meals at present. Self check in was online and a bit excessive but most of the questions can most likely be ignored.”
“Just revisited after a range of improvements have been made by the new owners. The hotel/bar/restaurant has a much better flow to it now and the bedrooms have been decluttered, leading to a much better look, with a place now for your luggage. Rooms seem really good value for the area. Would definitely come back again.”
“Very modern hotel with everything needed. The car park isn't on site, but it's only a short walk. I would imagine it's a great place to stop in the summer, with views over the Marina. All the staff were very pleasant, helpful and friendly. A good hotel base for exploring Brighton.”
“Stayed in Brighton a few times but this time was exceptional! Amazingly warming, welcoming staff. Mike was very attentive and although first time meeting him, he felt like an old friend! Very much a people person and excells in his role. My partner booked the room with the balcony and was a very spacious room with a huge bath tub. Breakfast was fantastic too, best hash brown I have ever had and I have had a few. This is one place you will definitely return too after staying here. Fabulous all round. Thank you so much for making our stay so enjoyable and having a parking space (although not guaranteed) was so helpful too. X”
“Popped in tonight for a few pints. Bar staff were lovely. The gentleman (Stephen) behind the bar poured me a great Guinness 0.0. And the lady (India) was gorgeous and so friendly. Will definitely pop back to see them both.”
“Absolutely beautiful & quiet surroundings. Peacocks wondering around freely. Horses being taken for a walk all whilst we were having breakfast. Food was lovely too. Definitely recommend if you're looking to be in a natural setting & wanting to feel totally relaxed.”
“Great location, cheap. My room was nice and clean. Had a private room with a private bathroom. Nice clear TV and good WiFi. Close to the train station and a short walk from a bunch of things to do. Excellent choice as a base to go explore Brighton.”
