“Great Bristol pub, nearby the Bell and the Hare on the Hill. Out of the three, this pub probably offers the best beer selection (but each pub is fantastic in its own right - crawl all three) and the staff and locals are lovely.”

“This is a proper pub. Bar food at ridiculously cheap prices. £1.50 for a ham or cheese and onion cob. Scotch eggs the size of your fist. Beer choices are good and lovely friendly atmosphere. Not for anyone that wants nachos and chicken nuggets but bloody great pub. Proper.”

“Hidden gem. Great little pub with good select of traditional food. Had the Farmers Ploughman and was not disappointed. Always seems very busy, so need to get there early. Lovely outdoor seating with plenty of room. Dog friendly inside and outside.”

“We stopped off here for a quiet pint after a long walk in the Mendips. What a charming place... real old world country pub atmosphere and decor, yet run efficiently by the owners - an independent pub, so they do things their own way. Including running their own micro brewery with a range of beers. If you're in the area then it's most definitely worth visiting.”

“We had finished a 3 hour walk around Shirenewton and knew there was a choice of 2 hostelries. The decision was made for us since The Tredegar Arms had closed down to the Carpenters Arms we ventured. They couldn't have been more welcoming and despite being full found us a time window of an hour at a table for four. One of our group is allergic to garlic, the pork was garlic free and he likes pork! The other three of us had the lamb. FABULOUS meals, everything home made, the Yorkshire puds and for me the crowning glory was the cauliflower cheese - DELICIOUS. By the time we left the pub was rammed, so methinks it's best to book ahead. There were vegetarian options. Parking is on-road when they're busiest. Lovely old building with a roaring log fire near the bar. For one of the best Sunday lunches this is worth travelling to.”

The views from the outdoor seating and beer garden are lovely anytime of day, especially in the summer, making it the perfect place to relax with a few drinks. The inside seating area has a warm and cozy atmosphere, perfect for the winter, with friendly and professional staff. The food here never disappoints, with a wide range of choices, all of which are delicious! A special thanks to the Chef, Matt behind the bar and Kim who served us for the 5 star service. “My partner and I booked a stay here in September 2024 for his birthday weekend. From the initial phone call I was impressed with how accommodating they were. I have various dietary needs and usually going away anywhere is quite stressful, however the staff here put my mind at ease immediately. They had multiple options for me to eat at breakfast and the evening meal we had was delicious! In hindsight we should have eaten here on both evenings as the food is amazing! The room was lovely, warm, clean and nicely decorated. The hotel location is perfect for walking through Tintern itself and equally for a short drive to Chepstow. The staff were extremely friendly and went out of their way to make our stay memorable. Grace was very attentive, always checking in to reassure me about my food choices and to check that we were happy with everything. We would love to stay here again, perhaps with more time to explore further afield this time!”

“Calcot Manor offers an exceptional experience with matched service. It is a beautiful setting. We always enjoy using the gym / spa and then finishing off in The Hive” for a coffee / bite to eat. The staff in the Hive are fantastic “Amelia” being one of the many whom always greet us with a smile and warm service. We highly recommend a visit.”

“Stayed here for three nights before moving closer to Oxford. Wished we had spent all of our time in this beautiful country establishment. The owners and their wonderful team were beyond wonderful. Service was impeccable and the rooms were beautifully presented and comfortable. Meals were absolutely delicious and the pub was everything you expect of an ancient country inn, fireplace, fabulous bar, anda warm and friendly atmosphere. “Pretty decent food for a good price, I had a milkshake and burger. The chips were fantastic and so was the milkshake! The burger was decent too. The main takeaway from eating here was the atmosphere was really quite nice in my opinion. It was busy and the decor was awesome! The service was decent but the kitchen is quite small so food did take some time to come out. But if your not in a rush its worth a visit.”

“The service was great! Had lovely conversation with the chef who is from Barcelona, and the service staff who is also Spanish! We ordered the steak paella and it was delightful! Full of flavours of the beef and various spices that unfold as you bite into the rice! The rice was nice and crisp and flavourful till the last bite! You can tell that the chef loves to cook and he checked in on us a lot! The croquette was really crispy and rich. The octopus was a nice complexity of flavour. From the sweetness of the octopus, to the punch of garlic sauce and the earthiness of the mash! A great combination altogether! The atmosphere was really nice! Fit for a cosy intimate wedding”
